> @lowpopping Make sure to consider the opportunity cost. There are only 121 1st Edition PSA10 Charizards in the population report, with the majority of them being tied up in collections. The massive price increases have brought quite a few to the market recently; however, the amount we’ve seen available in recent months probably isn’t sustainable. I think Gary is right, that to a lot of collectors, it’s overvalued. On the other hand, many of these sales are being driven by wealthy celebrities and investors. Personally, I think the 1st Edition PSA10 Charizard has transcended the Pokemon community and will continue to see significant growth due to competition outside the Pokemon community.

To be fair, 95% of Pokemon collectors can’t afford to buy one in the first place, so its kind of silly saying its overvalued when they were never in the market for it.

Excluding investors, its probably correct in saying that most of the PSA 10 1st Edition Charizards will not be resold by these celebrity figures.

Investors, however, are largely concentrating on this one card, knowing that it’s value is likely to increase in the broader market. As I said, I think the card has transcended the Pokemon community and will continue to grow based on interest from outside the hobby. That’s just my personal opinion/speculation on it.

> I would personally say the card is out of reach to a lot of collectors, but not overvalued for a lot of them and overvalued vs out of reach are two different things! When I hear the word overvalued it suggests to me that it’s market price is far above what fundamentals/analysis suggest it should be!

I like to collect Charizards and fortunately can afford to. When valuing I ask myself would I pay x ammt for this card? The answer determines whether I think it’s overvalued or not. Now would I pay 300-350k for a PSA 10 1st base Charizard for my collection OR as an investment? No and No. Hence overpriced in my opinion. Would I pay 100-150k for a Shadowless 10? Just might. That 54 pop is super attractive to me considering almost everyone would want one, There’s about 40 illustrators and those are sky high even though few are even mint. Would I trade 5 shadowless for a mint one! Nope. It doesn’t fit my personal valuation.

Fortunately I’ve been more right than wrong so it wouldn’t serve me well to minimize the weight I put on my valuations. At least not at this time.

I know I’m being somewhat pedantic with this response/question, but isn’t the pop report with regards to shadowless somewhat misleading since they didn’t immediately recognize that designation?
