For some reason I never hear people talk about Armaldo.

He’s like some sort of lobster-turtle-bird hybrid. I think he’s really cool, but I don’t recall hearing anyone ever say anything positive about him. Super underappreciated!

Armaldo’s not my favorite Pokemon – though he’s certainly in my top 20. My favorites are Latias/Latios; not the most popular Pokemon ever, but I do see them get some amount of (well-deserved) love. Armaldo never gets any.

I have fond memories of picking up an Oasis theme deck because I thought he was dope. Arita did such a great job on his Sandstorm artwork and I believe Armaldo (alongside Kabutops and maybe Bastiodon) to be one of the best fossil Pokémon designed.

Anorith and Armaldo are based on the Anomalocaris that during the Cambrian afaik was believed to be the earliest known apex predator for an ecosystem. Armaldo is the shape of the former extended into having the therapod base. Love it to death. Missed out on the Miracle Of The Desert poster earlier this year yet I’m stoked I got the EX Tin equivalent.

Haxorus is mine, and is largely forgotten despite its rarer Dragon monotype. It was Charizard for a time, as I just loved cool looking Pokemon as a kid. When Gen 5 came out and had a number of new dragon Pokemon, I instantly gravitated towards Haxorus.

In the west at least, Magnemite doesn’t seem that popular. Magnezone has a ton of competitive use, but outside of that and the rare enthusiast, the line isn’t talked about much. Interestingly enough, I think Magnemite is a lot more popular in Japan for whatever reason, though I think part of the like is memey lol. It’s been voted fairly high in the last few years’ popularity polls and a couple years back Banpresto’s Ichiban Kuji did 5 Pokemon Research prize lotteries featuring merch of a specific Pokemon, of which the first was Magnemite. (The other 4 were Mimikyu, Magikarp, Gengar and Dendenne for comparison.)

I’m a sucker for industrial aesthetics and as my attention to detail towards that style from fashion, architecture (Cyberpunk/ Brutalism/ FFVII Remake etc) and music expand, so did my love for Coil. Interesting experimental noise/ambient project too. They once were made as an unofficial turned official remix ep by Trent Reznor.

@davie Girafarig just offers what no other mon does aesthetically. I love the yin-yang feel, and that the tail is like a primitive, almost mutually exclusive being. Stegosaurus was always my favorite dinosaur as a kid, and there’s evidence to suggest that it may have had a small brain in its tail. From the first moment I read Girafarig’s pokedex entry about its tail having a small brain, I loved it haha. Also, the normal/psychic typing is just awesome. It’s always been just good enough in the games as well to be fairly good as a partner (my Girafarig in BDSP actually clutched my win against Cynthia’s Garchomp with a Dazzling Gleam to the face and made me champion recently). It just has the right amount of cuteness, creepiness, and coolness to be an all-around awesome mon. I remember as a kid wishing so hard that when I woke up the next morning that Earth would magically be part of the Pokemon universe, and it was specifically so I could go out and catch a Girafarig, Umbreon, and Houndour haha.

Loved reading this and can relate much! I loved it’s og twin headed design. At this point I might as well share to another dinosaur enthuasist that Carnotaurus is probably my fave. It has potential can be extended in such inter,esting, fleshed-out ways but that optimistically can be said for most if not all beta designs. @davie , this has been a wholesome thread and is much appreciated!

Yeah, I don’t know any other mon that is universally preffered by it’s shining then it’s original. I’m not the biggest Gold Star or hell even Metagross fan but it’s Gold Star in both variants shines perfectly altogether in comprising a stand out best-of-the-best tier cards for me.

Love the Aron evolution line. Steel/Rock is a cool combo. I wish he could get lightning rod as an ability. An additional immunity to electric would be bonkers

Rhydon DOES have lightning rod. I want it for the immunity, not the sp attack boost.

Totally. I always thought Shuckle was pretty cool tbh – he’s also a bit of meme, yes?

Thank you. Certainly in some ways yeah. In others, he has so many qualities that are his alone too. Hes been my favorite since the old days before the memes like Dorkly and such. That being said, every Shuckle meme like that does bring a smile to my face and gives me hope that he will get more cards and such. This is the painting I have in my living room.

I’ve had a rocky relationship with Shuckle. I hated the memes, but over time from playing randoms have seen and admired it’s niché position as a small hazard setting support class that also became the forerunner for Ferrothorn, Pyumyuku and Pinurchin etc. The icon art you got going is moving, made me think of Heatran wearing the balloons lol.

And while I’m at it with this last monthly Arita masterpiece, as it wouldn’t be me without sharing any critique; is how much of a dum-dum idea it is to place stupid slogans on the biggest selling point of the cards over where there is more-then enough negative space to fill.

The worst thing about Rhydon was the introduction of Rhyperior. Sad downgrade IMO. And because of this we’ll likely never get any really amazing Rhydon cards.

I think Rhyhorn is fantastic, but that’s kind of a moot point because it’s Rhydon’s pre-evolution. Rhyperior, on the other hand, was completely unnecessary. Rhydon was already strong enough as it was.
