Is Skyridge overvalued?

Thank you!

This was fun to look at

So many times in the history of pokemon cards have people argued something was overvalued and then the price just kept on climbing beyond what anyone could imagined. Think critically about products, people argued that PSA 10 1st ed charizard was over valued and a week ago everyone on this forum argued that the black label hidden fates charizard was over valued. Is a product overvalued because people are butt hurt over it’s price (1st charizard) or is it over valued because of artificial hype(black label charizard)?

It’s an Old set, one of the best sets ever(in my opinion at least), short print run/limited supply, one of two sets to have crystal cards and has crystal charizard, one of a few sets to feature E-reader cards. This set has so many things going for it. You could argue it’s over valued and maybe, maybe the price might go down but I only see this set ever having an overall increase in value over time. So no, I don’t think it’s over valued.

Are there any hard figures that exist for print runs from Wotc to modern eras? Is just seems a lot is quite subjective, although it’s likely that skyridge had a low print run compared to others.

I suppose we could go off single PSA records as a rough guide.

As stated multiple times already:

  1. It’s incredibly scarce and has been for a while.
  2. The print run was significantly smaller than other print runs.
  3. It has a Charizard.
  4. The artwork is some of the most appreciated.
  5. It’s the last wotc set.

Skyridge has supposedly been overrated for 2 ish years. I hope everyone continues to think that as I slowly accumulate more of one of the best sets there is.

People keep pointing to the low print run of Skyridge as this thing that separates it from any other set. I mean sure, the box price right now is astronomical but the expected value of opening a box is also incredibly high. Does anyone actually know how much less Skyridge was printed then the other eseries sets or even neo destiny? (Answer: probably not)

In reality, if you want to talk about graded availability, the PSA 10 pop for Skyridge holos is significantly higher than both expedition and aquapolis (maybe even combined!) PSA 9s are more or less similar between the sets but even the cheapest Skyridge holos rarely appear less than $50 and I can buy $30 aquapolis and expedition holos all day.

You can argue for artwork, maybe. I think aquapolis in particular has some fantastic artwork though. Expedition has a lot of popular pokemon too including all three original starters, pichu, dragonite, mewtwo and the only wotc mew set card.

Overvalued or undervalued really just comes down to a personal opinion since within a market at a given instant, everything by definition is appropriately valued. I would not make a prediction of future value on these sets either. But personally, my own opinion is that Skyridge is overrated and/or Expedition and Aquapolis are criminally underrated.

I’m 24 years old and while I did experience base, fossil, jungle the wotc e reader era was the limelight of my childhood. There’s no art even comparable to that era. And it’s not just that it was printed less. Most people did not like the layout as kids, but they are returning now. I don’t think it’s all hype. Because expedition base and aquapolis do so well also. Expedition base gets the most flack, I don’t think any hype surrounds that set even though Expedition Blastoise is killing anything from all three. And it still does really well sealed or not.

I would just add:

More people want Skyridge today than wanted them at release. They were readily available everywhere back then. Even I collected fewer sets than I normally did cause of such little interest.

The problem I have with the artwork and history pitch is that it glosses over how insanely high the box is compared to the cards. I absolutely agree the set has solid art and is the historical end point for wotc. But people aren’t paying a premium for that. Its largely a money/hype game for just the box. No one is paying a premium for the cards (artwork).

When people discuss Skyridge they are really just talking about sealed product. Every card is always available in every condition, and prices are pretty much the same, if not slightly lower for holos.

When hype meets scarcity, prepare for a rocket to the moon.

When hype meets Black Label Shiny Zard, prepare for memes.

I don’t see where the hype is coming from that would make the set overvalued. Maybe I’m becoming disconnected with the media trends but it’s seemed to me that every set has been equally ā€œhypedā€. In terms of general sealed product hype though I could imagine where box openings (on youtube) have risen interest.

Expedition had a lot larger print from my recollection. Aquapolis teetered off and Skydridge’s calling cards were the six secret rare options with twelve total variants to collect including Charizard. That makes a big difference in my opinion. It’s a more desirable set to collect, not to mention their playability. And interest seems genuine to me.

@jkanly, Skyridge and Legendary collection are the poster child for social media hype. They are by far the front runners for raffle, mystery box, and other hot thing that is happening right now in the flipperdome. In fact Legendary has the highest rate of unsold individual cards per quantity of listings. Ie. people are just flipping/buying sealed product, not the actual set.

Where something like expedition with comparable product availability doesn’t get the same hype treatment. Ultimately its pokemon and even some of the most speculative aspects still increase over time. But there is definitely an element of social media hype specifically around skyridge and legendary collection.

@smpratte Thanks for explaining that to me, it seems I’m missing all the raffles.

A few years ago we all discussed the PokĆ©mon go highs (it’s hype possibility) ; PokĆ©mon go was as much an entry point to the hobby as it was an innate boost with it’s exposure. Is your opinion that a proportion of the value is from genuine interest as well?. I think it was maybe 2016 when legendary collection hits 4500 per box, so in terms of sealed chase products it had been consistent at around 400% of base and jungle prices at the time, which was before a significant amount of the exposure. Skyridge was more than double for sometime as well. Just sharing my thoughts and curious for yours.

I feel like LC is overhyped but skyridge isnt; PSA10 Skyridge (holo) prices are really low; most of the holos go for less than $135 while most of the reverse rares of LC go for double…
LC Charizard (PSA10 REV HOLO) goes for around U$S2.7K while Crystal been floating around U$S2K/2,2K and i feel Crystal way better and unique.

I feel like Skyridge ArtWorks are pretty, plus it has my fav. card wich is Crystal Charizard.

And if you check Skyridge prices during last 2 years, most of them are either, stable or going down.

I think the fact that it is still spoken about in these terms so many years since its release and with so many years of speculation behind us…it tells us that there is genuine interest and also a lack of appreciation for the set. It’s still talked about in the same manner and people either seem to absolutely love it or just don’t care for it.

Any publicity is good publicity and Skyridge will always freely occupy headlines . New collectors will learn about it quicker than Aquapolis or EX Sandstorm, both of which were released about 4 months before and after Skyridge respectively. For that reason there will always be a new wave of lovers and haters (or non-appreciators) of the set. There will be more of an organic demand for the set and prices will be higher than other sets of the era.

I personally enjoy the artwork as I do with all the e-series expansions. I also like the history behind it and it being WOTC’s final set. overrated in 2019…I don’t think so. overvalued…in my opinion, I feel as though the price should come down a little and other WOTC e-series sets should go up a little.

IMO the sealed product is overvalued, the crystals and PSA 10 holos are undervalued. Not many sets where this is the case. But there should not be a 15k box when the chase card in PSA 10 in $2.2k (though FWIW, I’ve been trying to buy at that supposed price point with no luck)

Crazily overpriced, there is no logical reason for it to be the second most valuable Eng box. In saying that though I look forward to next year when boxes hit 30k and PSA 10 Zard is 1.8k

Eh. It’s easy to grade but at 3 crystals per box it’s still 1:72 packs, unique artwork, Charizard. I will happily buy any that go for 1.8k

If I own it already, its undervalued.
If I do not own it and I want it, its overvalued. Hehehehe
