there isnt a big huge collection market for some of the rarer older japanese promos and of course the price is the bigger issue.besides everyone on here there aint much of people going omg nuts over the older mixture of cards compared to the newer releases which the hype is what gets the value running.everyone will have their own way of wanting certain cards like all the jolteon cards like at worlds a friend of mines was looking for the jpn gold star umbreon and was willing to put a good chunk into it.
I might just wait out this hype on Umbreon. Every seller I have spoken to on eBay (who has owned and sold the cards) seems to agree that it isnât that rare nor should it be worth that much. Of course, the market determines the latter bitâŚ
Iâd pay 3 grand for your umbreon âŚwell depends if I make it to Japan this winter and run through the city like Godzilla and find one. But 3 grand would be the cheapest I would ever seen it at. Market for it definitely determines its price. I met one seller who said I shouldnt offer more than 3 grand for the pair in PSA 10 (he sold his for that much as part of an agreement for the buyer to buy the other 3 PSA 10 PLAY gold stars, but after the first half of the sale was complete, the buyer ceased contactâŚpretty shady) Others are selling their PSA 10 for 5g and up.
But like @soulwind said, probably better to let the hype die out some. Gold stars are the in-thing. They will probably be remain up there for a while I guessâŚI know there has to be someone who is hoarding a bunch of themâŚwhoever that person is, can they please flood the market so I can get one relatively cheap!
Its impressive that these lottery and Daisuki promos are becoming as valuable as some trophy cards! Who knows what crazy amount a fabled scramble eevee would sell forâŚ
As a college student I donât really pay for much besides my own collection but the more and more time I spend on these forums, the more and more I feel like I should invest in a different part of the hobbyâthe hobby of collecting with intent to sell in the future. If anyone wants to give me tips on how to do this on a tight budget, feel free to send me a PM.
@azulryu - Hard work! Unless you can afford to sit on a bunch of graded cards for a long time, you are looking for quick returns which sometimes is hard!
I donât know about others but I always avoid long-term investments purely for the sake of profit.
I purchase cards at prices that are profitable in the moment. If I think they will go down in the near future (e.g. playable cards that will be rotated out), I sell quickly. Otherwise I donât mind holding onto them to get the price I feel they are worth. Most of the cards that are in my collection were purchased below fair market value, and most of those I plan to keep for the sake of nostalgia. I try not to mix collecting and selling as much as possible, but I also use the selling bit to fund my collection (as do many others).
