How many copies of a card is enough?

Meh, 500k

One copy is enough. More than that seems greedy.

If you need more than 2 mint copies for your collection, I think your collection goals are not that great. Instead of 1 binder page of all the same card, why not different cards to appreciate different artwork? Also, it is frustrating to see a binder full of the same cards, because I could use a copy of that card, but since that collector has 480 copies, there are less available and the price goes up.

Haha, page 2 and we’re already at communism and dissing other peoples collecting goals. The thread title delivers!

Why do you think that you’re in a position to critize other people’s collection goals? Just because they don’t match your own? They can enjoy having 10000 mint Neo Genesis Sunkerns without your approval.

I’d much rather save in case a rare Gyarados item pops up than spend 50 bucks on repeated Modern Gary’s that don’t interest me as much as my favorites (Base, Shining, Hiroshima, Delta). I’ve found much more satisfaction in just keeping the funds to the side and have already found success with a few purchases because of that strategy this year alone. I had to learn the hard way by missing some key stuff the last few years and feeling frustrated with buying repeats and missing a big item when all I needed was 1 version of each to satisfy my goals.

That being said, I do love seeing 3x3 sets of the same artwork or binder sets of a single pokemon (@dizzle24’s collection comes to mind). There’s a small Gyarados collecting community where some do similar binder sets but I’ve seen so many of them quit because they couldn’t get the big hitters and ended up selling their collection because of it. :slightly_frowning_face:

If I had the means, I’d totally do something similar, but for now, 1 of each is fine.

Collecting 480 of the same card or collect 480 different cards. That is the question here. I just don’t understand how one would get enjoyment from flipping through a binder of exactly the same card. Maybe a binder page or row filled with the same card could bring enjoyment, but I just don’t get the whole binder goal.
All I stated was I think that this collection goal is not that great. People can collect how they wish.

you’re not a true collector unless you own a significant portion of the PSA 10 population of your favorite card

There’s only 1 card that I’ve bought more than one copy of. The glorious interviewer’s questions

For some people, maybe flipping through a binder full of the same card produces the same amount of happy brain chemicals as it does for somebody who collects all different artwork.

Depends higly on your collection goal. I decided that cards that can be easily acquired by going to any website and buying x35 in stock are not worth stacking up. I collect x1 of everything but for the most iconic and vintage versions I have no limit on how many copies of a card I will add to my binder

I have around 130 base machops… I don’t really think I’ll ever stop buying them.
The trick is I try to buy them in person, so it makes the goal much more difficult, and more rewarding.

My maximum is 18, to fill 2 9-pocket binder pages. But within those 18 I try to vary with different versions/languages of the ‘same’ card.

Currently, I try to buy at least 4 copies.
1 to keep and 3 to sell eventually.

Ofcourse I’d like to buy more, but my money tree isnt flowering yet.

For a collection card, I’d only really ever go to 2 of an identical card, one for the binder, one graded. (Now I think about it, maybe 3 or 4 if the same card was needed for multiple different binder goals, but I’m not far enough along my collecting journey yet for this to be the case.)

For a playing card, I’d probably say around 40. Enough for complete playsets in 10 different decks without having to unsleeve them and move them around.

I have never had the desire to own more than one identical copy of something. Maybe two if I’m planning on selling one in the future.

I actually really like the idea of this strategy. It reminds me of when I bought a few XY Ancient Origins back at the Hartford a few years back. I was hanging out with @reinasierpe who convinced me I should pick them up despite me already having them - she justified it by remarking at how I would have a better memory of them if I did it this way than if I bought them online. That memory stuck with me.

Might adopt this idea for the future so thank you!

Cool! So glad you liked the idea.

I flip through my Machop binder more than most. “Oh! that one was from a little shop in Japan” “That was a 40 card deal from facebook marketplace with that weirdo!” etc. soooo fun

It helps that Machops were 10 cents back then… haha idk if i would do it with any other card…

It still allows me to hunt big bois like the Trainer Deck Machop PSA 10, so it’s a flexible system.

If it’s a rare promo that I enjoy, I will keep buying it as long as the price is right.
