How do you feel about Coinbase's entry into the hobby?

Crazy how words legitimize something that’s clearly not legal.

Like a certain baseball-capped, Prismatic-hoarding YouTuber who always says “this is not financial advice” then goes on to say things like “Pokémon is the best wealth builder on the planet, you’re a dumb Timmy if you’re not investing a large chunk of your net worth into in-print sealed product at 2-4x retail price”

Is there any reason to think this will end differently from Gamestop Power Packs? Seems like no one talks about that anymore & don’t think that noticeably impacted prices…

they prolly ran outta all their good inventory awhile ago and cant acquire more unless they wanna pay 4x the last sale price

I don’t think so. A lot of the desire to gamble with rippers is some form of loneliness and groupthink. Winning a pack out of a digital mystery pack lacks both. It is also harder to liquidate random single packs instead of PSA10s.

I feel like it is the opposite, you get 2 dopamine shocks for the price of one. What pack you get, and what card you pull.

There are tons of YouTubers and stuff selling pack blind bags for a 1/200whatever chance to get goodies. It would make a lot of sense since it seems to have been proven successful already. PokeRev I think is on his 8 or 9th iteration of it already.

The only hangup with e-rip I could see is that people may want to keep whatever pack they get more frequently vs random slabs. They would potentially miss out on the arbitrage of people selling back instantly at a discount more often.

I think the difference is that Pokerev buyers want to rip the packs.

The target audience for this wants some high value that they believe they can easily liquidate for which I don’t think single packs provide. Not sure what the highest single pack goes for, but probably not anywhere near what graded cards go for.

I don’t like it and I would prefer that Pokémon cards weren’t seen as an investment asset. But it is what it is, I’ll just try and ignore it and keep focusing on my collection.
