Help needed with an Ebay return request.

I sold a guitar amplifier almost 2 months ago on Ebay for $600. I shipped it well with insurance and about 2 weeks after receiving it the buyer opened a return request because it was damaged in shipping. He sent a few not very defined pictures of the damage and stated that the amp was not functional. I messaged him back and apologized for the inconvenience and asked if he could send me some more pictures of the amp and of the packaging as received so that I could open up a USPS claim for insurance. He never responded so after 3 days I opened up the USPS claim anyways. I eventually received a letter from USPS that was a copy of one they sent to the buyer saying that he would have to bring the item and packaging into a local facility for inspection. I never agreed to a return or refund on Ebay and other than the original message for the request the buyer hasn’t messaged back or escalated the request. He opened the request on may 26th so it’s been exactly 1 month since he opened it. Should I ask Ebay to close the request or will it close automatically? I don’t want the guy to get screwed over from USPS garbage handling but not opening an item for two weeks after having it seems farfetched to me (pun intended) so I was thinking he either was just trying to scam me and backed out or maybe dropped the amp or damaged it himself and was trying to get his money back? I know if I paid $600 for something and it arrived damaged I’d be in contact with the seller ASAP after their messages and if I didn’t resolve with them I’d escalate it. Thanks for any help!

“Should I ask Ebay to close the request or will it close automatically?“

If a certain amount of time passes surely eBay will close it. Should you close it yourself? Can’t see the harm in trying.
