Has anyone had a similar experience?

I’ve got around 1000 cards in my collection, of which exactly three are modern product. Occasionally I have felt the pull of getting into a modern set because that means I could open booster boxes without losing thousands of dollars in value like you would with old WOTC product. At the end of the day, I have never gone through with those purchases. I did buy a Venusaur/Celebi Team-Up card because I like Venusaur but ended up giving it away because it didn’t invoke the same feeling I get from WOTC product.

IMO, your collection should make you feel good. If you look at your cards and don’t feel anything, what’s the point in having them?

My poor character? In the title of this thread I asked if anyone has had a similar experience. I’ve been collecting for years and I’ve heard it all. Collect base set 2 is not an original response you watched a video and repeated it. There were a few people on this thread who actually shared their experience and I didn’t get to even read it or respond to them. I’m on the verge of leaving the hobby and making some decisions to sell and was just looking for experience of others who have been in the hobby for a while and have dealt with similar circumstances.

Yea I think I’m selling what I have that doesn’t invoke those same feelings and I’m hoping it’s enough to get me back into being engaged. It’s about the same amount you mentioned maybe a little more graded and ungraded. I’m keeping My graded base fossil and jungle sets no matter what. But I really want to be engaged and active again.

That’s actually an awesome idea. The show and the games def got me into the cards. I hope it keeps working for you. Opening packs and being able to enjoy it would be awesome. I just dont know that I myself could get engaged in the new tv shows. But thats an awesome idea.

Put everything away and don’t look at it for some time. Whether that’s a week, a month, a year. That’s up to you. When you decide it’s time go through what you have and find what interests you most or what direction you’d like to go in and set a new goal.

I think a break is probably best too. Thanks for the response.

I agree partially when it comes to some of the GX and especially the Full Arts, but I have to say the set art on commons, uncommons, rares and holos has taken a step forward during Sun & Moon era which I’m happy about.

Also the so called alternate art Tag Team GX look amazing. Those should be the actual Full Arts. I hope Pokemon understands this when we get into the Sword & Shield era. Less ultra rares and better art. Make holo cards feel great to pull again. I prefer Japanese over English because they have holo borders on holo cards. They look so much better than modern English holos. Small things, but it makes a difference.

But yeah, personally, the ex-era is still my favorite and will probably stay like that. And as time goes by I’ve started to appreciate DP and HGSS era more as well.

Shining Mew from Shining Legends, Ooyama’s Tag Team Wailord and Magikarp, the upcoming legendary birds stained glass artwork, there’s beauty in modern too if you look hard enough.

I admit that wotc stuff is more creative and nostalgic and also agree that 5ban are due a literal ban from illustrating any more cards, but that only makes it more special when an amazing artwork shows up out of nowhere.

And hey, I have have my own conspiracy theory that one day, when these computer generated graphics get stale, we will see a reversal back to the hand drawn look and feel. I think if a limited print modern set was to be released in which every artwork was drawn by a notable pokemon artist it would sell out in a fraction of a second.

So nintendo may be playing this long term game of milking the same shitty artwork over and over again until a time comes when we finally lose interest and stop giving them our money, at which point they’ll slap our faces with creative, hand drawn artwork forcing us to hand them our wallets once again. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s ok if you disagree. I was not at the point I’m at just a month or two ago. I think the last modern card I bought was a mimkyu and Gengar gx alernate art from team up and I thought the art on it was good. I just recently started looking at modern product differently and asking myself what Im doing. Mainly how much is printed, the quality of the paper, who the target audience is, the cards just seem to be doing the most and it’s not nostalgic and now its not enjoyable. Shining legends is still at my local game store like it was just printed yesterday and that doesn’t seem to be changing anytime soon and it’s hella popular. There is demand for it. That just spells it out for me. Ima take a break and then probably return to collecting base jungle and fossil since I feel like I’ll never not enjoy doing that.

I think this is a natural point that every collector will hit at some point. I think you’re already on the right track with optimizing what you buy and downsizing the cards you don’t really appreciate. As for newer stuff, try to be selective with it. Only buy the cards that you really enjoy looking at.

For instance, I’m a binder/set collector for everything up until 2010. I stopped doing that with the new sets (especially SM on) because of lack of nostalgia and the number of cards in the sets. Instead, I started collecting Japanese versions of modern artworks that I really liked since they’re typically cheaper and it adds an extra challenge of locating a foreign card. Mitsuhiro Arita is single-handedly saving the Ultra Rare tier if you ask me. Tag Team GXs are the first thing I’ve seen in a while that I wanted to go out of my way to collect.

Hope you find what you’re looking for, and like Tem4Elf said, breaks can really help too.
