Happy Birthday Ken Sugimori!

Happy Birthday to the man, the myth, the legend Ken Sugimori! It is safe to say that Pokemon wouldn’t be where it is at today without this man. In light of today’s significance, everyone post your favorite Ken Sugimori art, cards, sprites, and all!

Here are three Sugimori cards that stick out to me:

My favorite might be shining gyarados but I appreciate how simple all of his work is. His illustrations for trainer cards stand out, such as town volunteers. I would love to pet a squirtle or bulba like this, great vibes! Happy B-day Sugimori-san!

Happy Birthday to 杉森 建, one of my biggest inspirations. I personally am a huge fan of those exhibits. Here you can see how skillfull he handles the g pen to create those bold outlines. Furthermore it provides a great example how fine those water colour gradients are.

This artwork is so good it hurts. If there was ever a vintage trainer to make into a modern full art, this is the one.

Happy Birthday Ken Sugimori! His artwork makes a strong impression. Even as a child his artwork for Gen 1 made Pokemon stand out from the rest. It has been incredible to see his art style evolve with each generation. Here are my favorites of his.

His artwork of the Pokemon on a stock background is iconic, but I find his trainer cards to be very striking. He depicts the world of Pokemon as a companionship between people and Pokemon. In Mr. Briney’s Compassion, you can see Mr. Briney sailing the seas of Hoenn with Peeko. It gives this side character from Gen 3 a lot more impact. The Pokemon Fan Club card achieves the same effect. The fan club members discuss their favorite Pokemon just like in the game. Both cards give the impression of a world where people are crazy about Pokemon. From earlier in the thread, Pokemon Breeder Fields and Town Volunteers have the same impression. I am grateful to Sugimori for bringing these characters to life.
