Cert number debates take number collecting to a new level! As with most trends, they aren’t the total market. Let’s imagine there is a universal law where all new certs earn x premium, it’s not like an old cert PSA 10 rayquaza is now $100, it’s just a potential percentile difference. Also what’s considered new is constantly in flux. I remember when 4xx - 6xx certs were considered new, now they are old. I watched a 2xx trophy kanagskhan outsell a newly graded copy. If someone paid a premium for that new cert, it didn’t even carry into the next sale, as availability is more important.
I agree PSA is more aware of cards, but the new vs old cert debate like most post 2020 trends have a poor noise to value ratio. For example, I know someone who is phenomenal at grade arbitrage. They buy chase cards they think are under graded, regrade them, and sell into that “new cert premium”. These are all percentages and not total truths. Its all about understanding those percentages and more importantly how to value them.
Anyway, yes new certs are better. Please sell me all your old cert trophies at a discount, thx!
