Soon I will grade my childhood collection, and within it I have a gold star gyarados that will probably grade a 5 or 6.
I’m estimating its worth between 3.5-6kUS based on past sales, but I don’t actually believe in the future growth of this card, in this condition.
I’m wondering if you guys think it would be a smarter investment to sell the gyarados and then buy a 75/25 mix of psa 10s from 99-2012, and some select modern cards that I like.
All this being said, I used to think this card being $80 was insane when I was a kid, but now that its 3.5k+ I can’t see it doubling, tripling or 10xing. Where I definitely see other cards in the market that i believe can double, triple or 10x in the next 2-10 years. This is compounded by the fact that I personally have drastically higher belief in the future price potential of psa10s than i do lower grades.
Curious to hear your opinions, or what you would do in my shoes :^)
nobody knows and nobody here would give you a serious answer to poke-investment advice because its impossible to predict. The most experienced collectors sold PSA 10 gold stars in January for peanuts.
That said, this forum will skew vintage and most would say a gold star is a better hold than anything printed in the last 15 years. If you disagree, you dont need to convince us, a lot of the best stonkz worked because nobody else was doing it (hopefully you can at least recognize a little irony there w/modern)
First of all: I don’t consider my own collection to be an investment.
For me, Gold Stars have had a kind of Blue Chip status among Pokémon cards throughout the five years I’ve been collecting.
I understand the initial thought that, from your perspective, having that much money tied up in a single card creates a kind of concentration risk. But my gut feeling would be that if Gold Stars were to crash, less popular cards would likely suffer losses in value as well.
If we were talking about larger amounts of money, I would look at it more differently. But with €3.5–6k, if you split that across e.g. 10 cards with an average value of 600 each, you can quickly end up in a price range where selling becomes quite a hassle.
You then have to sell 10 individual items, deal with the shipping costs 10 times, and potentially deal with 10 different buyers and all the annoying back-and-forth that comes with each transaction.
since the current market trend has basically been psa 10 or bust for pokemans best to sell and dump it into whatever psa 10s u can since those have had multiple times better gainz than any other grade
Personally, I would collect what you actually want/enjoy over speculating on a single card unless you have a personal attachment or specific desire to own that card. I say this because I picked up a lot of cards I liked a few years ago and many have increased 5, 10, 20 times over and a lot of them I did not expect to go up as much as they have.
The Gold Star will always be in demand and pretty easy to sell for obvious reasons, but you might have more fun buying and collecting a wider variety of cards which you can always sell or break up over time as needed as well.
