I have a chance to buy a German 1st ed box locally and am wondering if it is a safe investment like most other wotc boxes?
Ive primarily collected wotc boxes over the past few years but have noticed a spike in foreign boxes as well. I know one is at auction which ends today for 7k+ right now.
What are your opinions? Also the seller is asking 6k CAD.
Last night the Ebay auction for sealed 1st ed German Base set sold for $7,600 USD. If you can pick up that box for 6K Canadian, buy it. I’ve been watching foreign Base set cards rise in popularity.
@simplestacker, Yes but I am the buyer and when there are multiple ways to be scammed with those services you do NOT use escrow or wire transfer with a rando. Your legitimately asking to be robbed.
Just like @jcincy101 said you only go with High end trusted sellers to do that. If you guys want here is the ad -
Shes located in Whitehorse right now and is an older lady. She has sent me pictures of her id next to the box with a sticky that has my email to confirm she has the box in person. My only issue is she will not do PayPal because she does not trust it…
Second, when she sends the escrow service email showing where to wire money it comes up in my junk mail as a not trusted address, I’m assuming its a basic scam escrow service that I’ve heard of before.
If any of you would like to probe her and try to buy it go for it. She seems willing to talk and is very responsive but since she won’t do PayPal I have backed away. Almost makes me wonder if she is legit and just stuck in her way of thinking lol but who knows.
The box looks legit. Looks the same as the one I have. Can you go old school and mail her a certified check? If her mailing address can be found on Google maps, can you find that house? Maybe even call and speak to her. Just trying to line up as much information as you can with the person. It all seems ok with me.
Just my $0.02 the box isn’t in mint shape. The wrapping is loose and wrinkled. The corners are squished. That might be why the price is so low.
@kh36, She gave me her address, name and phone number. i tried calling multiple times with no success and mention to her because its such a large transaction i want the most security possible in the deal.
She accepted my offer of 5500 CAD which is obvs way below market value but she doesn’t want to sell online so she knows she wont get full price locally. Yes, the box isn’t mint but at that price its a really good deal and i was hoping it would go through but here we are. Shes almost adamant on using an escrow service linked to Canadian tire gas plus
Whatever you do, DO NOT send her a wire transfer or anything along those lines unless you are dealing with a reputable seller. For all you know it might just be some 20 year old guy trying to scam people. The only way I’d do this is through PayPal G&S or in person. Every person that I’ve ran into that had a problem with paypal ended up being a scammer.
Thanks for the input man! 100% agree with you, paypal is the only way to be safe these days with rando sellers. I told her if she comes back down to the main city we can do an in person deal but doubt that will happen.

Strange to use escrow to a Gas Station. That might constitute fraud with misuse of company funds on her part. I’d think a Canadian bank would make sense and be more trustworthy. These people that make it impossible to deal with in a normal fashion are often hiding something.
well, I bought a german base set 1st display 3 years ago for 700$, you can do the maths.
don’t underestimate those foreign cards, there are 100mio. people speaking german.
