A similar thing actually happened to me! Though this was about 2011… I bought a Base Set Unlimited Charizard on eBay thinking it was exactly that, then ended up getting a nice surprise! Ended up grading it for a 7 couple years after. Doubt I’ll ever be half as lucky ever again. 
If you just sit on eBay all day and continually refresh the newly listed listings every few seconds you’d be shocked how much you find. I’m sure some of you already do that though.

many of us have searches set up that notify when certain things are listed 
True, but with a title like that it wouldn’t pick up by most notifications. The title was “Charizard 4/102 Holo - Base Set”. I personally search a lot for Pikachus, but even though I sometimes search for “Pikachu Base” or “Pikachu Error”, I have “Pikachu Card” as bookmarked search.
When I sometimes come across sold listings, I see why I missed some based on their crappy title… And sometimes the cards I want are in bulks, which I don’t search for (maybe I should…)
But sometimes you can come across some gems. I once won over 300 cards including 20 holos (LP/EX quality though) for just 0.80 USD (excluding shipping, but still… 300 cards for 80 cents…) Sometimes you get lucky when no one else bids on the items, or forgets about the auction later on.
