Aside from the price of the PSA 10 charizard - I do think that as far as the price of the box goes: it does, as zorloth mentioned, provide a nostalgic experience to open a base-ish cards at an affordable price. The box also retains its own identity - its the only set in xy with full arts of the mega kanto starters, and it’s the only set you can rip to open the doduo and exeggutor secret rares. It also has a unique reverse holo style that was never used for these cards. It’s a good set, but I do understand the people that bet against it. Regardless, I appreciate the set for what it is and don’t mind seeing it being one of the more-expensive modern boxes right now (if 4.5 years old is still considered “modern”)…
I’m aware of what the current market is like. I was speaking to how collectibles markets evolve over time. And, with no exceptions that I can recall, collector bases become more purist over time. As time goes on and markets mature, the value gap between originals and reprints widens.
It’s not a matter of being biased in favor of vintage. As I stated earlier, I would also expect the value gap between 1st Ed. Base Charizard and Base Set 2 Charizard to widen over time. It’s a matter of original vs. reprint. I can’t think of a single example of where the price gap between originals and reprints became smaller, but I can offhand cite hundreds (if not thousands) of examples of the exact opposite. Is it possible that Pokemon will prove to be the exception? Sure; anything’s possible. But my bet is that the Pokemon market will not prove to be totally anomalous, and that collector habits will mature much like they have in every single hobby since the dawn of man.

I think they should be highly valuable, they are vintage, rare and unique in their own respects.
I think in the short term the wildest things ever can happen that make absolutely no sense, but over the long term things make sense, and fundamentals take over. This is the biggest learning lesson I have taken from this experience

Personally, I much prefer 1st Edition to Shadowless. I’ve heard very different things about supply. Some say Shadowless is rarer, some say it’s less rare, some say it’s about the same. I have no clue and don’t particularly care. The important thing is that 1st Edition Base was released first (if only by a few weeks).
Shadowless to me is like Beta in MTG. Alpha and Beta were print runs of the first set, with Alpha being released first. Alpha is rarer, but Beta is also exceptionally rare. Orders of magnitude rarer than any Pokemon set. Over time, Alpha has unsurprisingly outperformed Beta. Which is exactly what I would expect. Because, as I’ve said, collector bases become more purist over time. People always end up gravitating toward the original version of something. It’s the reason why there’s a market for ULG foils. ULG was the first set to feature foils, which is highly attractive to collectors. It’s also the reason why there’s a market for 7ED foils. 7ED contained the first foil printings of many highly iconic cards, and with new art to boot.
Ultimately – first = best.

Interesting the Shadowless 9 Zard is increasing in population significantly faster then the 1st Edition 9 and by the looks of it, the pop report will overtake 1st Edition 9 soon. Although the Shadowless 10 has increased by only Pop 1 in the last year which is protected by the difficulty in grading. I’d feel very comfortable putting my money into a Shadowless 10 Zard, but maybe prefer a lower grade 1st Edition to a 9 Shadowless
I haven’t been paying too much attention lately, but it seems like PK as a whole is not doing as bullish as projected, specially with all the LP unboxing and 25th anniversary hype.
Now Dave and Adam’s on the other hand has been a curious case IMO.
Even in the height of Evolutions demand, when they were selling a few boxes a day at $1100+ D&A was not willing to do larger purchases/trades of them. They maxed out around a few boxes at $750 a pop.
Just recently they had a status bar showing the percentage they had left in stock. At one point it said 75% left, and the math came out to ~10 boxes in stock. That’s now gone, and as of right now there are 3 you can put in your cart. You can do the same recon without the status bar by seeing how many you can add to your cart at any time. At one point it would fluctuate daily by several boxes. Unless they are moving crazy inventory, they seem to be acting fairly looney around the whole set.

Currently in the process of selling my box to Dave and Adams for $750. Felt it was a very fair buylist price and the difference between that and what I would get on ebay after fees is so minimal that it was worth sending to them to avoid the headache that could potentially happen.
The price of the box has stalled at the $950-1000 price point and I would rather have the money atm since I am saving up for a larger purchase which is the reasoning as to why i sold now.

I’m a big fan of the XY Evolutions and think it’s a great time to buy some singles from the set, the mew is especially interesting and I think will go up in price with time. Charzard idk, it seemed to have peaked and I think it’ll settle in the near future.
I always thought Shadowless was the lesser print run. Youve got to remember a lot of shadowless cards were sent back to have 1st Edition stamps added (which is why we have the ghost Pika and such variation in stamp)

I’m sure some will sell – but let’s wait and see how well these get absorbed. Might draw out a lot more supply, too.

But I’d be happy if it does come down to a price where we can open it and have fun again, it makes no sense to open a box when you can buy the loose packs cheaper, so I’m assuming people collecting the boxes are keeping them sealed

If you try to buy the lowest priced boxes, it says that they only have 3 available and the price goes up to $895 when you add to cart. The 2nd lowest says that they only have 6 and the price goes up to $1399 in cart.
