ebay search algorithm?

I’m not exactly new to ebay but I still have a hard time understanding the search function and auto translation. Like wtf is this?

The word “English” got translated into “DEUTSCH” aka german. How??

Does this happen to anyone else? Is this supposed to be like that/is the seller aware of this?

As an international seller myself that’s surprising to see… though I’m not sure what could be done to fix it given that its an error on eBays end. Is this the only error you see or are there more (in the description)? :grimacing:

Also are you browsing using ebay.de?

There appears to be a filter that catches the world English and considers it a language, rather than a word, then does the conversion

{language} → {whateverLanguageYoureViewingThePageIn}

I would imagine if you viewed the page in Chinese, it might say be converted from

{English} → {中文} [which means Chinese language]

or if viewing the site in French

{English} → {Français}

I’m sure they had a reason for adding this filter programmatically, and perhaps may not be aware that it’s affecting search results

Edit:

This Chrome extension may be of interest to you (to disable automatic title translations on eBay):

Yes, I’m using ebay.de. As far as I know the translation only affects the title, the description doesn’t get translated.

This one has it right. Even though it has some weird formatting.

That would be weird as it’s their own page.

Thanks though, I’ll look if there is a version for firefox.

Hmm that’s weird… Never seen that myself. I look on ebay.com/.nl/.de/.fr/.it/.es/.co.uk/.com.au/.ca/.at on a daily basis, and come across the same world-wide auctions in multiple of these translated in the eBay’s language. I must admit I never payed much attention to the titles, since I’m mainly looking at the pictures of the Pikachus themselves in search of new ones.

Sounds like a bug on eBay’s part… Maybe post a bug-report somewhere? I think ‘English’ certainly shouldn’t be translated to ‘Deutsch’… It should be ‘Englisch’ instead.

Dude… ebay’s algorithm is screwed up! it is strongly biased against international sellers from outside of ebay.com!
