eBay Helpe - Customs to Europe

Hi guys!

A prospective buyer has asked me to undervalue a card on the customs form when sending it to Europe. Is your experience, has this ever been a problem? The buyer has 100% feedback (less than 100, though) and is a longstanding eBay member. Thank y’all for any wisdom around this. Hoping some of the higher volume sellers here can give me some advice. The card is going to Sweden.

In my experience most sellers especially from Japan do this without being asked. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with that before.

In the End its your choice to make, I myself have had a few people who didnt want to undervalue their items, So I didnt buy from them because taxes would make it too expensive. People from Europe just want to save money wherever they can since collecting here is so much more expensive than in the U.S.

It shouldn’t be a problem. The only thing that happens it won’t get stuck in customs and the receiver doesn’t need to pay taxes if you value it under $25. Especially knowing that the card is going to Sweden I don’t see a problem. I’m from the neighbor country Finland and Sweden is very similar to us when it comes to these things so I wouldn’t worry

Just know that by undervaluing it you are breaking the law. Tax evasion is illegal and that is what undervaluing items or marking non gift items as gifts is doing. Also by undervaluing it you are taking all the risk on yourself. If it is worth $1,000 hypothetically and you undervalue it to $25 then you cannot insure it for the full value. If it gets lost or the tracking doesn’t ever fully update to “delivered” then you will lose a non received claim exactly 100% of the time. Many of the cheaper services have issues in certain countries whereby the tracking doesn’t always continue to the end.

I am not saying not to do it. I am just trying to educate you so you fully understand what you are doing and the risks involved.

It’s been a while but pretty sure you can insure it separately.

This is all correct, I should note most sellers will only undervalue if they’re paid via paypal friends and family so if anything does happen you can’t chargeback against them. If they’ve paid you via good and services and you haven’t insured the item for the full value and it goes missing you’re screwed if they chargeback.

I guess if the buyer doesn’t want to pay customs fees cause it’ll save them a ton they won’t mind gambling on friends/family payment?
