E5/Skyridge Gyarados. Cool menacing art or Michael Bay shrimp trash?

Thank you for using a pie chart

These are just the colors of a Dragon Rage or in this case, a Dragon’s Vengeance.

The tongue is always what got me with this artwork. No other Gyarados card has a mouth/tongue that looks like this.

This is an artwork I definitely have mixed feelings about. I want to like it because I like Gyarados but I just can’t get around the demon face and Gene Simmons KISS tongue. A couple days ago I actually asked my husband what he thought about this artwork as he’s a Gen 1+2 water collector and the first thing he asked was about the explosions

There are two other Gyarados cards I saw as well that have the fire backround/explosions. The only thing I could think of is that maybe Gyarados goes around and destroys ships out in the ocean or something and sets them on fire. Sounds pretty atrocious.

I always assumed that the fireballs were either part of the Poké-Power (Flame Vapor) or from the competing Pokemon (e.g., Charizard from Skyridge using Fireblast). It’s a cool rendition of Gyarados, but the background is confusing/lackluster.

I’m ashamed of you pfm

How dare you compare this amazing art by the greatest to… to… michael bay? I could barely utter it.

Really wish he had stuck around  The houndoom is still one of my all time favourites

I’ve never even noticed the background all that much before…

You can’t look away from those derpy eyes and that crappy squished face.

I also wasn’t familiar with the explosions in the background before.

I don’t feel top strongly about it either way. Maybe lean towards liking it because it’s a different look for Gyarados and very like Masago’s other arts (which I generally like for their raw… intensity).

Well gyarados can learn flamethrower/fire blast via tm. But he looks a little lean here, could use some rare candies lol

Over the years it’s definitely grown on me. But for the first few years I knew of its existence, I couldn’t see it more than a Gyarados version of a rubber chicken.

I just wish the head was less narrow - otherwise I would say it’s an awesome art for the thematic aspect, the explosions which make me think back to the ancient Gyarados that destroyed cities, and the body in the background.

I love the card, don’t get me wrong. But because I will always see the goofy face first, I voted that I don’t have strong feelings either way - I used to dislike it. Now I like it. Just not very strongly.

Please forgive me for my heresy.

I honestly hate it.

I think it looks weird. It doesn’t suit the Pokemon vibe.

I really like the unique art. Contrasting colours that really make the holo pattern stand out. It’s also a neat departure in style.

…and for context I also like Michael Bay’s film “The Island” despite that many would consider me a film snob (I also collect Criterion Collection releases).

I generally like how hard Masago’s art goes too, but this one’s just too derpy.

@azulryu hit the nail on the head; it totally has the rubber chicken vibe!

If anything, the identical pose on Ex Deoxys Gyarados shows how goofy Skyridge is.

I always took the explosions to be fireballs as a reference to the gameboy attacks.

For me this artwork really brings home the mental image of a terrifying dragon creature that Gyarados embodies.
The oddly square-shaped tongue on the other artworks looks rather goofy and cartoony to me in comparison.
