And then, one of the best art in the tcg, so good that I had to start this thread

What about that muk makes it one of the best arts in the TCG?

I think my favorite Grimer cards have to be the Vending and EX Team Rocket Returns ones.

The Double Crisis Grimer is really good, I just prefer the derpier depictions.

Every time I see this Grimer though, I think it’s Muk

My favorite Muks are the Scarlet and Violet Base Set and Aquapolis.

I do really like the Cosmic Eclipse Alolan Muk a lot too.

Will be interesting to see who comes out on top!

I always thought that a lot of these Muks look like Jabba the Hut…

This was surprisingly good poll.

Overall favourite cards are from original era but I prefer Alolan variants, both look great and Dark/Poison typing was awesome choice so I gave them slightly better design points compared to Kanto variants.

I had already forgotten how funny Cosmic Eclipse Alolan Muk artwork was.

Thank you for asking, I’ll try to explain!

For me this is an incredible work cause:
-the darker tone, almost oneiric or sci-fi. You’re actually quite unlikely to find similar cold and crude depictions in the tcg. Kusajima took some freedom to illustrate the muk in a different way, more like a blob than a pokemon. That’s some liminal space indeed.

-the perspective is so interesting and dynamic: it’s reaching out to you, if feels unsettling and in motion. It’s a very fun intuition executed in a clean way. I like the slightly angled framing (simple but effective without overdoing)

-the best part imho are colors and composition: the brilliant use of lights and reflections make it feels like we’re watching through some water ripples.
The shimmering background reinforces the mystery, you almost want to follow the tubes till the vanishing point to seek informations, understand where are we (a laboratory? Sewage systems?).
But that’s not important because of the ominous presence in the foreground will soon catch you.
Perfect composition also thanks to the balance of purple + green, and light background + dark muk. Complementary colors used greatly.

Something so alien and terrifying of the way it looks.

Thank you for the explanation. You changed my mind about this card

Thanks for the breakdown. I always enjoy your analysis and thoughts which helps put into perspective what possibly might be the artists thoughts while designing the card.

Cheers!

can’t say i’m too surprised, with the results tbh

The design votes make me a bit sad, my guys deserve better  also the only time they have gotten something textured really wasn’t that loved

I’m also not very surprised about the top 3, even if i would have guessed the team rocket one being the winner. Some surprises tho like Midori Harada grimer and muk being placed somewhere in +30, also challenge! outperforming the original fossil muk and Kusube TRR grimer was weird to me
