E4 Pokémon VGC Tournament - Generation 4

I’ve been having (noticed?) some issues with the teambuilder on Showdown for VGC. If you try to validate your team with 6 Pokemon, it says you’re only allowed to bring 4. Maybe this isn’t a problem?

The bigger thing to note is that it doesn’t automatically reject all Pokemon that are ineligible. For example, Heatran, Dragonite, Salamence are all not legal, but pass through the validity check just fine.

Yep, @silversnorlax204 mentioned this to me as well. I’m not entirely surprised as it’s an old format with a non-existent playerbase so we may need to construct a custom format for this.

Good morning, everyone!

Don’t forget to register for the brackets if you haven’t already. We’ve already got a good amount of people signed up!

Currently looking into the issue with VGC 2009 on Showdown. The main problem is the format is played by making a team of 6 Pokemon and only bringing 4 to battle, but the teambuilder won’t let you make a team of 6.

What if each player showed their opponent the 6 pokemon in their team as a team preview, then copy/paste the 4 they want to bring to that game into a ‘new’ team in the teambuilder.

For example, if my team was Blastoise, Venusaur, Charizard, Pikachu, Lapras, and Espeon, I’d show my opponent that list, then choose four of those to plug into a new team that I’d use for the game.

I actually wonder if the 4 pokemon limit was an intentional choice for VGC 2010 that accidentally got applied to 2009, since for 2010 you’re allowed 3 restricted pokemon on your team (though can only bring 2 to any one game).

In that vein, the other issue of pokemon slipping through the legality check could be solved by using the 2010 ruleset (i.e. you can use restricted pokemon and there is no level 50 cap, so pokemon like Dragonite and Tyranitar can be used).

Alternatively, each person could also post their team after the round and their opponent could check it was compliant, but that feels messy.

Funny, this was actually going to be my workaround for the issue. We’d have everyone playing “open team sheet” and post their teams in this thread beforehand and then play out their matches. Players would be free to choose any 4 Pokemon from their 6 across different games in a set.

The main drawback is it’s rather tedious and I have a feeling people may forget to post their teams here before their match.

The same issue persists when trying to construct a team of more than 4 Pokemon when selecting VGC 2010. I’d also rather not play a restricted format for our first VGC bracket as it lets people choose from a larger pool of viable Pokemon and gives players more freedom with teambuilding.

@silversnorlax204 had mentioned the possibility of setting up a custom server for VGC 2009 but I’ll let him speak on that.

I made the mistake of originally linking the VGC 2008 rules in the OP. For some reason I thought the banlist was the same as 2009 but it was actually quite different. That is probably why Pokemon such as Heatran were “passing through the legality check” when they were actually just legal in 2009 but not 2008. OP has been updated with the correct 2009 rules.

Currently at Pokemon Worlds, but following along with this thread. Will try to tackle this issue upon my return. Hopefully there is a quick and easy answer for this.

So are you saying that when previously the winner spot was out of reach for any peasant here now you introduce your sparring partner and also the second spot is reserved? Will be a hellava battle for 3rd place! (In other words, welcome to the forum @Tryson21 !)

Lmao I did try out a few teams against him last tourney but I’m pretty sure E4’s best players can hold their own.

I take no responsibility for any of the crackhead teams he builds tho.

We are currently at 12 entrants for Singles and 14 for VGC Doubles.

To spice things up a bit, if we get 20 entrants for either bracket there will be prizes for Top 3!
