Stop stealing all my players

Jokes aside, sounds like fun. If there was some online simulator akin to showdown that let you build any deck at will I’d happily join. Doing an old wotc format would also be fun.
There is! Although it’s in open beta rn
I would certainly be down to try a legacy/ expanded format in the future!
While definitely outside the scope of an E4 tournament, I highly recommend anyone interested in PTCG eternal formats to check out the Ruby Sapphire - Power Keepers, aka RSPK! It hosts one of the most diverse and balanced metagames in Pokemon history, and probably has the most active playerbase of any retro format. Decks from RSPK play much slower than decks from current official formats. RSPK uses a broad card pool from a nostalgic time and the learning curve can be as steep as you want it to be. It’s a unique experience from a bygone era.
If playing standard, definitely use live. The barrier to entry is quite low. The game is extremely accessible. Limitless has a great tournament organizing tool which can keep track of decklists if you choose to go that route.
I recommend checking out meta decks on https://limitlesstcg.com/ to help you get an idea on deck building. You can look at decks that have performed well recently and just use the same 60 cards, too (that’s easier).
Well it looks like we have some solid interest here! Not sure how many people we would need to get something like this started, but we can leave it for another couple days and see if more people are interested
I’m very interested as well! I have been playing competitively IRL for almost 15 years (not too much on Live, but will happily build decks for this tournament.)
Okay guys, so this is who we got for those interested!

I’ll probably take some time to figure out how to plan all this out and see how it will work, but I think this is enough people for a small tournament! We could do a tournament-bracket style, or we could just do the local style of random pairings and then whoever has the best win/loss ratio by the end. If anyone has ideas about how we could organize this too, drop 'em in the thread, I have literally 0 zero experience with something like this ![]()
Also maybe we could get profile badges for the top 3 ![]()
Thanks for trying this out @needszeebs . It will be fun! I started playing to get a feel for how the format works. Like all of these formats more experience equals access to better cards and decks. As a newby I’ m ok getting my but kicked. Lol
We Could run it like a league cup.
There’s a swiss tool from limitless: Swiss Calculator – Limitless
For 14 people, it’d consist of 5 Swiss Rounds (Phase 1) → followed by a Top 4 Cut. They have a pairing tool too, I believe.
Could make each round best of 3, would prob take 50~60 minutes per round, so could try to do the event over multiple days like the VGC event to work around peoples schedules.
PTCGLive we can add each other via friend name when we get paired and it’d have to be open decklist, so everyone can submit their list at the start of the tournament to the organizer and it could be shared before each round with the opponents.
Unsure if I’m missing anything.
This sounds wicked, excited already!
Thanks for organizing! My wife was a professor (has since let her certification lapse with the move), so the both of us are pretty knowledgeable about tournament format if you need any help! I agree with @mykel, League-style is always a solid choice.
Standard is a safe bet! GLC is also a really fun format for those that may be a little more seasoned, with the downside that many GLC cards aren’t available in TCGO yet, unfortunately, so it would have to be webcam with proxies or something similar.
Would love to join if still possible. Ptcgl has greatly improved compared to when it launched. ![]()
Yea ill add your name!!
Count me in as well!!
Should we try to gauge who has experience with the TCG and who doesn’t, and if so, should we try to somehow cater to those with not that much experience? Not sure how we’d do that (maybe match them up with each other?), but maybe it would be good to know. I don’t know how it is with the VGC tournaments, but I imagine a new player with a non-meta deck going up against a experienced player piloting a meta deck might be a not-very-fun experience.
I have not much experience as stated prior. However, for me, also part of the fun and experience is also to learn while preparing for the tournament. I will try to customize the deck and learn from resources, but all things considered, I know that I will be facing much much stronger decks, which is fair to people who are more experienced and also know the stuff well.
For me personally, pairing newbies is fine for initial rounds but eventually the newbies will hit a wall. The fun part would be trying to make sure I put up a good game.
Cheers!
Yea to be honest I think you can access cards very easily and practice endlessly in preparation and even as the tournament organizer, I dont have much experience.
If you wanna make your own deck you can, but you can also put together some strong meta decks on LIVE for quite cheap/ no cost at all if youre savvy and commit to playing a bit for the free credits.
Theres also tons of free resources such as JustinBasil and YouTube that show all the most popular decklists and explain exactly how a deck should be played. So, its very easy to get to at least an intermediate level of playing skill in a few hours if youre willing to commit the time and effort into it imo!
I also wouldnt worry too much about the skill level, I think most of us are less experienced and the tournament is just for fun anyway! Even going to my first local, I got matched up against some new players, and some players that had been playing for over a decade. I won a few, lost a few, but it was overall still a very fun experience!
I forgot you pretty much start out with a ton of close-to-meta decks in PTCGL anyway, so everyone can pretty much roll into the tournament with near-meta decks (unless they don’t want to). I’m good with just running as is. Just wanted to float the idea, since it was applied for the VGC tournament.
