E4 ART CONTEST 2023 Thread! (Complete! Special Announcement for next year)

Just put my votes in! There was so much great artwork and it was very hard to choose!

@brendantheclayboy sorry about missing the deadline. I’ve been super busy recently and didn’t have time to finish my submission.

Card edit gallery is up if anyone would like to look back on all the entries in one place. Thank you to all who organised (@brendantheclayboy & @azulryu) and participated in the Contest, witnessing your creative passion projects for Pokémon has been joyfully wholesome

Ballots are closed! Please allow some time before the results are published. This is normally the time I say more about how proud I am of everyone and what an amazing contest this has been, but I have said a lot already, and have much more to say about the art itself, which is soon to follow. So I will just leave it at this:

Thanks again for all who participate, all who make this forum the best there ever was, and all who stood alongside and cheered and showed support to the contestants! Excitement and togetherness, though strong in this contest each year, is peak this year. When the reveal comes, please be sure to shower them all (and I mean all, finalists and non-finalists alike) with the praise they deserve, as is tradition! From artists showing how/why they did their work, to their inspiration, to viewers explaining what and why the love about the submissions, lay it all out, we all love seeing it! So much of this art is as good as if not better than the kind we see in the TCG.

Finally, I’d say the 3rd time is indeed the charm, and as kromatic put it just earlier, I agree that this felt super smooth and refined indeed, so I’m really happy we have gotten it tight and laid out. We had more subs and more voters than last year as well! Next year the contest will be here in full force, and there is always always space for improvement and tweaks to always strive for the best it can be. (I think, for instance, we will make it even longer a sign up or submission period, for example.)

There are some important honorable mentions:

Submissions so close in score that they deserve to be recognized. This year is unique in that these are within 1-3 votes (on average) away from attaining 3rd and in a couple cases even 2nd place, so they are very important to recognize. Recreation and Original category ESPECIALLY.

Huge congratulations to all the winners and also everybody who submited! This is one of the best events in E4 so hats off to @brendantheclayboy, @azulryu and everyone else who help to make it happen.

Super awesome. Much congratulations to all the winners. Very well deserved. Thanks again to @brendantheclayboy and @azulryu for not only the constant encouragement and immense enthusiasm but also for making the whole experience seamless and hassle-free as possible. I personally enjoyed my own experience very much and I am all the more inspired to be more creative for the future art contests.

Thank you to all the other participants.

Cheers!

Wow thank you so much!!:pray:t3::pray:t3:
I see a generous amount of my votes in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places which makes me very happy.

Thank you for the great organization @brendantheclayboy and @azulryu and anyone else who took part, created and voted.

Looking forward to hearing about peoples’ art processes here, and seeing some other angles and interesting bits regarding the processes.

And if anyone hasn’t participated and regrets it… Now is a great time to sneakily make a piece of art, store it away, and include it in next year’s contest  Use that motivation, ride that wave :ocean:

Big congratulations to all the winners and to all those that participated! I just went through all the submissions again, and the energy and creativity in all everyone’s pieces just makes me want to go make stuff. It’s infectious, and I hope others get inspired too, so we can set new records (again) with next year’s competition!

Again, a big thank you to the organizers @brendantheclayboy and @azulryu and all those working behind the scenes too (@koala for the submission gallery, @gareth for the winners’ badges, and anyone else I missed—I think someone also helped out with making the ballot?). It was my first E4 Art Contest and everything felt like it ran so smoothly!

Some comments:

Sometimes, I just hone in one aspect of an art piece (or piece of music) because I like it so much. I just wanted to say that I think the Mareep in @khairis Does Magearna Dream of Electric Sheep and the Psyduck in @mrbubbles Dreaming of a Starry Night are just super cute, and I just love looking at them.

@gareth The Lilypad Pikachu piece is also super cute, and I like the overall composition and how the colors seem to play off and accentuate each other.

@pfm Really like the composition of MEWTWO USED SHADOWBALL! too!

@oxidelake I also really love the Coral Sea Depths piece. I think it really makes you feel as though you’re getting a sneak peek into a Pokemon ecosystem, and I enjoy how the different shades of blue/teal really give a sense of depth. Highlighting not-as-often-seen Pokemon is also always a plus!

I have some things to share about my own submissions, but I’ll leave it for a later post, so this one doesn’t get too bloated.

Again, this was such a great experience overall :slightly_smiling_face:

@andrewvt36 =)

(oh and bloated you say? I already have such a long post ready I think I might have to hide it in a spoiler  )

oh and side note a certain someone has already awarded the winners with their badges, check your profiles =)

Congratulations to the winners! Everyone did such an amazing job and the contest was immaculately put together by @brendantheclayboy @azulryu and anyone else that put in work! Still astounded by the amount of talent we have here on E4!

I have no word, I really didn’t expect to be in the first 3, especially in the original category. I’m so happy that you all liked my artworks! Really really thank you for this awesome experience, thanks to the staff and thanks to the art ‘critics’ who voted!
It was so much fun to see all you fellow artists being creative and take this challenge. I genuinely think that everyone has a serious chance to win, every single one of you is so talented.

I also want to spend some kind words for the drawings that truly impressed me but didn’t ended in the first 3-4:
@kromaticlanturn Your ninetales is really a faithful recreation, you totally captured the spirit of the original card and I truly appreciate the choice of changing its palette!

@Dyl your rowlet(s) absolutely make me smile, they’re just so happy.

@Josh You’re a genius, awesome stylistic choice.

@zyxxke Your regice is so cool, it seems so creepy, dark and mechanical. You truly understood the nature of this ancient cyborg golem, better than the original card imho.

@Gus Truly a beautiful artwork, so joyful, funny, happy. This is really how a kid would show love to its lovely dratini. Gorgeous!

@cyberurchin Your lugia is awesome, love its aggressive nature and when Pokemon are depicted as animal in their habitat. I also saw you other works in art&craft, I must say you’re really talented.

@swolepoke I can totally imagine your art being a super expensive high end promo card, awesome. You had a great idea and perfectly captured the ‘childish’ style!

@niece love both your artworks! That charizard perfectly communicate freedom and joy, it’s so dynamic.

@northerninfernape I absolutely like both your entries, awesome work with traditional media. Your style is really recognizable and unique and that tentacruel is super faithful to the original!

@livindavido man, I love the retro look of your 3d artwork, it really really gives me 90s kinebuchi vibes!

@defluo like others said, I hope to see the final result of your sketch. But I can totally see how good you are in posing and composition, Amazing talent.

@veks I was so happy to see someone bringing pixel art! I know how difficult it is, since I tried in the past with very small canvases. Scizor is just gorgeous, I see how many details you added.

@mrbubbles That dbz homage is just genial, you truly understood what a child would have drawed. Love also how good you are with colors, it was one of my personal favorite.

@coil love how you put all your favorite pokemon and how they’re eating metal, it’s so funny. This is another artwork that would look so good as a real promo card, I can totally imagine it. Beautiful choice of colors too.

@lookaclara Amazing work, you’re so talented! I really appreciate the use of traditional media and I know how difficult to use are watercolors, You absolutely developed your own recognizable style and this is awesome.

@gott006 please give that pizza to psyduck! You really made me laugh, it’s so cute

@glenngould98 I’m truly impressed by your art, it looks like a manga panel with some imakuni magic. So fun and original it reminds me of an imaginary corocoro promo.

@khairis Your drawing was indeed one of my favorite, it’s so peaceful and well-done. It would works so well as a pokemon card.

@gareth your pikachu bring me happiness, it’s such a joyful artwork. Love how chubby it is and how it reminds me of tanaka’s weedle

@Schileru Your art is so joyful, you really have a masterful control of colors and a recognizable style. Mr Mime surfing is so crazy and fun, love it.

@oxidelake Your art is just beautiful, it could totally be a full art in the next pokemon set. I’m not kidding

@lyleberr Your artworks are so original and fun, I’m so happy you embraced the challenge and created something so fun and different. You’re truly a contemporary artist with a super creative mind.

Then, to all you people in the first 3 places and in the honorable mentions: what can I say? You rock, your art is awesome and you truly deserve it. Congrats!

Congratulations to all the winners and a huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this event possible. What a fun way to share our love of Pokémon in a creative and lighthearted way. Big thanks especially to @azulryu and @brendantheclayboy for organizing the event. I’m now eagerly awaiting next years contest!

I also want to give a massive thank you to anyone who voted for either of my entries! I had so much fun creating them and didn’t expect to receive many votes, let alone win 3rd place in a category. Thank you so much :sob::3rd_place_medal:

Congratulations to all the winners! It was so much fun participating in the event. I love the Child Category. It seems to bring out such great energy. Thanks to @brendantheclayboy and all the organizers! I really appreciate all the participants voters and artist. It what made this so much fun.

My process
On first Flight
2 things inspired the illustration.
I took a trip to New Zealand a little while ago and hiked through the clouds it was spectacular! The second inspiration is from collecting. Charizard was the first Pokemon species I collected back in the day. I am older than the mean forum age and have a 3 year old granddaughter. I thought how cool would it be to take her up those mountains through the clouds on a Charizard!

Super Rod.
I think I shared some of the inspiration behind this already. I wonder if folks found the hidden “witnesses” ? I do have a version with 20 hidden Pokemon. This version only has 7 not counting the main 3

I want to also share my reactions to some of this great art and artist that participated.
@bbobrob - you are such a creative person! I loved the mix of textures and composition of your works.

@Schileru I loved the colors and style of your Cerulean Coast. Clafairys expression was great!

@glenngould98 Ok. I give where is Electrodes trainer!?

@chefonaquest the subtle colors and softness of this piece are so quieting.

@oxidelake This would make the most fantastic card! I just loved this!

@cyberurchin Your Lugia is magnificent! I feel it’s power and motion in this work!

@Rattlesnake Hands down the best stther illustration I have seen! I love 4’11 Pokemon they are part of my binder collection. Thank you for this!

@Dyl Best friends truly captures what Pokemon is about

@Josh @gott006 Both your illustrations have such a fun style they just make me smile. Even now typing this out!

Thanks for reading this long post

@decoypalmette If I’m not mistaken I chose N’s Hisuian Typhlosion as #1 for the category :star_struck: Or #2, but definitely one of those.

I absolutely adore this one. Would love to hear about the process and materials (couldn’t tell if digital or traditional).

I love Typhlosion in general, as wel as his Hisuian form so it was a real pleasure to see :clap:

@liron Pokegangs got my #1, your stuff is next level. :trophy:

@decoypalmette Both your entries got a high vote from me, love the styling of the Typhlosion and I appreciate the creative team up with N. More of this please!

Exquisite turnout, everyone! I had such an amazing time looking through your submissions. Know that the two of us were watching the results live at some points and were oohing and wincing as the votes battled it out. It seriously could have been anyone’s trophy this year it seems. You all are amazing and I’m so glad that even those of you who had doubts about participating this year found the courage and inspiration to join.

It’s in due part of that inspiration from previous years that I gave my first official try at making an official card art for the 3rd Place Trophy. Normally I come up with the concept and a rough sketch for the idea so someone else can create the art, but this time I wanted to put in the effort to provide my own work. Here’s a behind the scenes peak at the process:

For folks who get the 3rd Place Digital Trophy Card - I titled my piece “Chimecho’s Rivalry”. Let me know if anyone understands. XD Obviously I will save the completed artwork for the trophy. It was a ton of fun and took a stupid amount of hours for me to create with my lack of talent.

Thank you @gareth for making the Winners’ badges again this year. It is always so nice to see you participate and also just give back to the community. Your generosity shines as hard as those trophies sparkle (love the little details you included in them).

Major shout-out to @koala for the display edits. The gallery looks amazing and I’m positive that Pokemon itself could take a note or two on how to showcase results for their future art contests. They look nothing short of stellar (please everyone see the first post to see Koala’s edits).

As always, a huge thanks to @andrewvt36 for the google forms. Your assistance since the first year’s huge lessons have literally streamlined our process and took the most agonizing part of the event and made it into one of the easiest. I cannot give you enough thanks for that.

Thank you also to the mods and admins who helped and allowed us to do this again this year and made the trophies and event an official part of this forum!

And last but certainly not least, an incredible and dutiful thanks to @brendantheclayboy for making this possible. I think this year’s event speaks for itself in how much insane effort you bring to make this a possibility. It is because of your organization, your note taking, the meetings you hold, your pre-charting, and above all your heart and enthusiasm that makes this a reality next year. Also your art! We all know you are the main driving force behind this event and I couldn’t imagine anyone else front-running it. Thank you so much, my friend.

Final shout-out to all the winners and everyone else who participated. I am absolutely floored by the results and look forward to every one of you participate next year if the it’s in the stars. For the folks who have participated in our other events - know that it was your efforts and art that inspired me to actively create a trophy card art this year of my own making. Yall are truly inspiring.

I also encourage anyone and EVERYONE who has ever had the thought “I cannot make art” to check themselves. Pick up a pen or pencil. And give yourself a few tries. You never know what you’re able to create. Don’t listen to the doubters, especially the doubter in your own head. We are all creative souls. Express yourself, have fun.

And give it another go.

Cheers all!

Congratulations to all of the winners of each category and props to all fellow members that submitted a piece. I would like to thank @azulryu & @brendantheclayboy once again for their dedication in putting this together and extend my thanks to anyone else who contributed to this event. There is a lot of noise in this hobby, but it is community events like this that reminds us all of what brought us here in the first place.

I have to say, participating this year though a last-minute sign up, was more meaningful to me then I could have thought. Doing something different helped re-shape the week and if I can recommend anything it would be to sign up next year and give the event a go, you might be surprised by what comes about and the prosses that evolves!

Bravo once again to the organizers.
