Dragonite 1st ed Fossil

Recently sold for 2500$ and 3550$. Any thoughts on the actual prices on this card/set in the future?

The one you are mentioning that sold for “2500$” sold for 2k shipped, the best offer sold listings do not show the price that was actually accepted and sold for. And the “3550” screams shill bid and the card is listed at $1999 BIN currently. One sold on December 12th a little over a week ago for just over 1k. That’s what I have seen most likely others know more than me as I don’t pay attention to english. Lovely artwork nonetheless love this card, favorite from the set.

At the moment your card is a steal .
A week ago you were testing the market.

Whenever I hear that everyone has gone crazy, that immediately tells me to not buy the item (for now), lol.

Is there organic interest in the item? Sure, it’s a cool card. Is it low pop? Not really, it’s 190. Definitely not a lack of supply. But is there organic growth? Is there some sort of event or idea going on that this card in particular deserves the hype? Something that prompted this? Not that I can see.

Why would prices double/triple in what…a couple week time period? People are shilling this card…hyping it up like crazy…and then will dump their products for huge financial gain. All it takes it 20% of the owners to realize holy shit I can capitalize on this profit big time, post their dragonite 10 on ebay, and bam, almost 40 dragonite 10s pop up on ebay. Then supply will exceed demand, and the card will likely go back to some cost level that it was prior, maybe a touch higher. Basically back to the stage of where it should be in organic…normal growth over time. Not doubling in 2 weeks lol.

We’ve seen the same pattern with all sorts of hyped cards. Oh this week it’s lugia 9. Next week it’s dragonite. Okay now buy this one. Now buy that one. And so forth.

Yes, sometimes the hype is legitimate. And obviously long term, most of these high end cards are obviously on the upward trajectory. But in the meantime they will pump and fall and consolidate and so forth many times.

Don’t fall for the bullshit lol. Is it a valuable and fairly iconic card? Yes. Are there any real market fundamentals that indicate why the price pumped so dramatically? Maybe I am out of the loop but I don’t see it.

The other thing I always consider - if it’s up for sale - obviously it’s not that special or coveted to somebody :stuck_out_tongue:. If it was truly so valuable and the owners believe that the price will go even higher, why would they sell? They’d just keep it.

Prices definitely haven’t doubled or triple in a few weeks lol. The logic that if it’s up for sale that means the owner doesn’t think it’s special or like it is pretty dull as well :stuck_out_tongue:

Referring to this shill bid auction + the recent prices:

I know everybody has been talking about this auction which may have prompted the OP.

short

Shill bidding ruining most auctions, one of those Dragonites jumped from 1K to 3K in a second pushed by new 0Feedback accounts.

Excellent post. The bolded sentence hits the nail on the head in terms of my particular situation. I’m a Dragonite superfan, but even still I traded three of my six 1st edition PSA 10 holos yesterday. It’s certainly one of my absolute favorite cards, but I can’t justify owning it over, say, a PSA 10 Poliwrath 1st ed PSA 10 holo and they’re virtually the same price with half the pop. Opportunity cost was just too high…

@duchessofkanto , Very smart selling at this peak price!

To think less than 4 months ago I thought I was crazy spending $550 for this card. Sadly, Ebay sold listings lately have been an absolute joke.

Just to add one more note, having 20% of owners put their card up for sale at the same time is also implausible, when have we ever seen that happen?

To be fair, $550 will still be an absolute steal for that card even when all of this dust settles.

I mean, it’s still Dragonite’s rookie card in 1st Edition. That is one of the most iconic set cards in the hobby.

People act the same way every time an item raises in price, it happens like clockwork, people failed to buy in at an extremely cheap price and refuse to accept the cards new going rate. Hate to bring it up but look back to the 1st Edition Base Set Zards rise, or sealed product in more recent times.

Last night, I used the proceeds from one of my PSA 10 Dragonite 1st Edition Holos to cover the entire purchase price of a PSA 10 Blastoise Trainer Deck B I bought via PWCC. Quite happy with my decision!
