Doob's Scyther Collection

Day :one::seven:

Japanese Pokémon Stickers. This may be the most generic-sounding category in the whole project, but trust me - there are some absolute gems in there! And it’s the biggest day yet: 36 items (and more are on the way!). :exploding_head:

We can’t talk about Japanese stickers without mentioning Amada. This multi-year, extensive series had so many sets and variations released over the years that it could easily be a standalone collection by itself. 12 different Scyther were printed across the various releases, with some featuring unique holo patterns or artwork that can’t be found anywhere else in the world! :fingerprint:

There’s an ongoing discussion about the first series (the one with the orange background) having a possible first-print variation. The differentiating factor is the paper on the back - in most cases, it’s white, but some stickers have a more yellowish paper. :yellow_circle: Sadly, some stickers have yellowed simply because of aging, so even though the first print is believed to exist, it can be difficult to confirm whether a particular copy is actually one of them.

I also have a page dedicated to other notable square stickers. They follow a similar pattern, although they’re much less standardized. Tahhato, Lotte, and most notably Topsun produced series after series of these. There are a few interesting variations that are very easy to miss:

:green_circle: Part of the 1998 Topsun sticker set was released right around the time Topsun was rebranded to Toppu, which resulted in a couple of different prints - one with “Topsun” and one with “Toppu” printed on the back paper. This also happened with other Topsun products from 1998, which we’ll cover in future categories. Sadly, Scyther was not part of this sticker group.

:green_circle: The 1999 Topsun (now Toppu) sticker set also had two versions, but this time the difference was on the front. For most Pokémon, it is simply a more zoomed-out version - as you can see with the two similar Scyther next to each other in this photo. But that wasn’t the case for all of them. These variations are really easy to miss! :pinching_hand:

And lastly, as is usually the case, we have the “Others” page.

I do have the Japanese bread stickers here. :baguette_bread: These are very low-effort, white-background stickers that have been printed in 400+ sets over the last 30 years. They come with certain types of sweet bread and are used by kids in Japan as part of their breakfast - basically an alternative to the Chipicao croissant from my childhood that I covered yesterday.

The other one I really appreciate is this rectangular holo from Meiji. It was a reward from a pack of biscuits :cookie: back in 1997, and because the sticker is so flimsy, very few have survived in good condition until today. It’s actually the only Scyther copy of this sticker I’ve seen in the last year - which is pretty unusual compared to most of the others in this category.
