I especially like how they are all soft focus and really cool and unique designs/poses and there is just Zoro being typical Zoro.

I ended up buying one too after I finished writing that post
Apparently OP-06 came out in November 2023 in China(??). I didn’t hear anything about the boa TR until a couple weeks ago.

For me, it’s primarily attachment to the franchise and characters. If this were anime card game #145 I would never given it a chance. I’ve been a weekly reader of One Piece since I was ~14, I’m 36 now. It’s a long time to develop attachment to the characters and story.
I spend probably an hour a week just reading images of fake tweets the characters would make on tiktok. I spend at least 3 hours a week just watching people talk about what they just read. I spend at least an additional hour a week just watching people read the series for the first time. It’s one of those obsessions that just will not go away. I don’t care if I’ve seen people read through a particular arc 30 times already, I will still just sit there and listen to some random mother read through it for their first time. I like to see people from different countries and different backgrounds read through it so they can shed light on references or make connections I never would have made.
Despite my obsession I have never purchased any piece of merchandise for the series, because the merchandise never really aligned with my tastes or interests. I’ve never been into figurines or loud shirts. I like card games. I think the TCG came at just the right moment, towards the end of this covid physical TCG boom. At the same time One Piece finally started becoming popular in America thanks to various things like the live action (which I hated) and the over the top flashy animation in the anime. It used to be rare for me to meet a One Piece fan, now I have some coworkers who are fans.
I want very badly to play the card game in person at an LGS. My LGS is having a difficult time signing up with a distributor that will allow them to order One Piece and receive kits for tournaments. The game itself is a lot of fun and the fanbase for the tcg seems to be mostly people playing the game who have either watched the anime or read the manga. I want to play it but outside of the fan-made simulator there is nowhere for me to play.
Because there is nowhere for me to play, I only collect for now. I try to collect mostly English but since it’s constantly sold out everywhere I started collecting Japanese. I collect primarily based off my attachment to the specific character, card art, and then rarity. It’s somewhat similar to Pokemon for me right now. I hope it’ll move to a spot that’s in-between MTG and Pokemon. MTG I primarily play the game and don’t really care about collecting. For Pokemon, I primarily collect, and extremely rarely play the game. Yugioh was way too convoluted for me. One Piece feels like the one I can play and collect and be satisfied with both.
As for why the previous card game failed. I have no idea, I’ve only heard of it years after it failed.

Got a couple submissions back from PSA. Mostly Carddass Hyper Battle which I’ve started collecting quite a bit. Also some 55th Anniversary Weekly Jump cards.
