Lmao. I hope I did a good job putting my thoughts into words, whenever I see someone put. … … I tend to see that as possible sarcasm or something possibly negative. just being open minded
Personally I go with BGS. Sure under a 9 they aren’t the most reliable but who is after cards that grade under 9. If you’re after a truly perfect card go for BGS. In my opinion their cases are so much more appealing… especially if you get the fabled black label. Other than that PSA is a great company from what I’ve seen.
I think, in the not so near future, PSA8 Base Set will become more desirable. If the prices of the PSA9-10 foils start rising above budget of many people it’s the logical step. So don’t say anything below a 9 is not collectable.
You literally just suggested switching to a company with more inconsistency and lower standards in quality for every grade but one. I seriously don’t understand why people think that changing to BGS is the solution. If people are complaining that they don’t thing their gem mint cards are gem mint in a PSA case they’re really going to freak when they see gem mint in a BGS case.
Is there any objective evidence that BGS is more consistent than PSA? They obviously have more nuisances when it comes to higher grade cards but that doesn’t imply consistency.
If we were to crack 100 PSA 9s and 100 BGS 9.5 and send them back in for grading to their respective companies, which company will have more variability?
Anyone want to donate their cards for the sake of science?
I can certainly understand why. I used to bulk up 8’s together and sell them in lots or just sell them individually as auctions and get hammered on them. The way I saw it 9’s broke even, 10’s made profit and 8’s I just wanted to get what I could out of them. I still was in the profit, but looking back on some of the cards I sold I wonder why I did it. Didn’t really need the money just wanted to cycle out inventory I guess. At some point after probably selling 100 or so for near to or less than the grading fee cost me I decided to start stacking all of them into a box. One of these days I will go back and assemble complete sets. The day will definitely come where I will be glad that I did.
All I said was switch to bgs if you are after the high grades. You just saw how much a bgs 10 charizard sold over a psa 10. There is obviously some real nitty gritty details that bgs looks for when it comes to the 10 grade compared to psa. I mean there is a reason that the black label is almost unheard of. Of course if people switched there would be more but all I am saying is if you want to grade for an absolutely perfect card go bgs. Don’t know why that’s a big deal. Obviously almost everyone likes psa here but again if you are going for perfect I think bgs would be your only option.
The inherent problem in comparing the two is that PSA only has 1 Gem Mint grade where BGS has 3.
In the most literal sense, there is the BGS 9.5 (Gem Mint), BGS 9.875 (10 gold label), and then the BGS 10 Black Label. I do agree that the BGS 10 cards can be strict. However PSA simply has only the one Gem mint grade, so naturally there will be more of a range.
Also, part of the reason why the BGS 10 zard did so well is because of its insanely low pop. Not entirely the strictness in grade, but I do agree that is part of the equation. Regardless of what people feel about the value, there are only 2 copies of the card with that grade, which is the main reason why it earned a premium.
Absolutely. I’m not trying to discredit psa. They do a great job. It seems that if whomever has a problem with psa’s standards the should go bgs. If perfect is what you want then in my eyes that’s all you really got. From a collecting standpoint I think bgs has more going for it. I see so many psa 10 cards that they have become kind of stale? No offense to anyone. If you get a black label bgs 10 that’s an achievement. However if you are selling cards it makes sense to go psa. It’s easier to get a gem mint therefore less wasted time and coin. Also I wasn’t discrediting anyone who collects under 9. I was saying bgs 8 below isn’t worth collecting in my opinion.
the solutions you’re suggesting has nothing to do with the problem. People are claiming that PSA’s standards are lowering. Even if this was true, it’s not. The claim isn’t coming because they feel their perfect card isn’t deserving of the 9 grade. It’s the opposite where they’re complaining that they don’t feel the card deserves the higher grade. BGS has an even lower standard for their cards so your suggestion will only increase the complaint.
because they don’t have stricter standards.
PSA mint 9 > BGS mint 9
PSA gem mint 10 > BGS gem mint 9.5
BGS pristine is the only thing that has a higher standard then PSA and PSA doesn’t have a pristine grade to compare.
