Creased Expensive Cards

E4, I am wondering what you guys feel creased cards are worth; if anything really at all? I know a card is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. However, would you guys buy creased cards?

For example, I feel like there is a good amount of 1st edition charizards being sold in the last month; many of them having severe creases in them (creased in half, corners bent over, etc.); but they still manage to pull around $400.00; would you guys personally pay this / buy cards like this?

And if you did buy these cards, would you send them in to PSA?

As someone who has not sent any cards to PSA (I have sent autographs, no cards, yet :slightly_frowning_face: ) - cards that are creased; in your mind do you value them instantly as lets say; damaged condition? PSA 1, 2, 3?

Long winded post, sorry, just looking for some expertise on the subject. As someone who would like to own a couple of these higher end cards, right now I can’t afford the top quality ones. However, do you think buying these lower end versions are worth it or stay away?

Thank you guys, greatly appreciate it.

Creased cards clearly still have value as people are still willing to pay for them. There’s a decreased value of course, but they’re not worthless. Any crease in a card immediately drops the grade to a PSA 6. That is, the highest grade a card with a crease can achieve is a 6. Cards with creases usually have more damage than just the crease so the grade is often lower however.

Personally I wouldn’t purchase any cards with creases in them, but that’s just how I am. I’d advise you to save up and buy a better condition copy, if I was going to purchase a 1st ed. Charizard I wouldn’t really go below PSA 7-6 depending on how the card looked.

However its all about personal preference, if it’s more about owning the actual card to you and less about the condition, don’t worry about it and do what you want.

As long as PSA 8s 9s and 10s are relatively cheap and readily available I would not buy heavily damaged cards. It would have to be something like an illustrator card at a severely discounted price for me to be interested.

So basically unless a card is extremely scarce or mint copies are prohibitly expensive, the answer is no for me.

Edit: if you feel that the card you want is already prohibitly expensive and it’s either get a damaged copy or no copy at all, I’d say go for it. But if it’s something you really, really want in good condition then work for it, save up money and buy the best copy you can

If it’s your collection buy what works for you. Believe it or not there’s many items I and other collectors own that don’t make any money, but as a collector it doesn’t matter because there’s no intention on selling. If it’s worth it or not is up to you to decide.

If you’re talking about investing I think it’s okay with some cards (1st ed charizard) but bad for others (unlimited charizard).

PSA would be roughly 3-6 range for creases. I personally don’t PSA grade these cards, I’d opt for the authentic route if I’m going for protection or more likely put it in a binder. The main reason for me to PSA grade is to protect the card. I figure if a card has a crease in it it’s already damaged.

As long as you buy at the right price and don’t overpay you should be fine. I have several binders full of old holos and they’re still fun to flip through, and when friends or family with youngsters come over I can pull them out and let them handle them all they want… so there’s still a purpose. There are lots pf people that don’t mind condition as much. The hobby is less enjoyable if you have to go into debt to own a single card. Just buy what you can afford.

As far as the card’s value appreciation, the lower the grade the more gradual and smaller increments of rise in price. So if your intent is to see a return in the next few years then buy as high as you can. But I honestly never worry about this, I just buy what I like at the price I can afford.

Awesome advice, thank you. Yah, the one I have been inquiring about looks pretty rough… always wanted this set since I got back into it. But 900; in my head I feel like that Charizard is maybe $400? blastoise - 100-150? and same with the vensausaur? Let me know what you guys think.

Totally understandable, I thought the same when I just started now only 2 months ago; but with prices steadily going up; I feel like I may miss my chance for a long time :slightly_frowning_face:.

Thank you as well, I know you are a big seller on eBay; maybe you can tell me about the eBay link as well I listed on what you would list those cards for and what you would realistically expect to get out of them?

Seriously thank you guys so much for the advise and input so quickly, GREATLY appreciated.

Edit: I think I forgot to put “” in the names on the quotes… sorry!!

cullers mentioned to Authentic encase any creased cards. Creased or surface scuffed cards look much nicer in a case.

As someone that will most likely have to settle on a PSA 6 or so when I do decide to buy one, I would not purchase these cards at all. If this was listed for $450 I’d probably still pass. lol

I think if you up your budget around $1000 you can find a ‘decent’ copy for sure. You wanted to spend $650 or so last time you were looking for one, if i recall correctly?

Something like this I think is a good buy.

Yah, I totally agree. I again, can’t justify that at the moment. Passing on a 6 at like 900 a month ago and watching them go up; I understand thats the game.

But part of me would also love to have all 3 of these in my hands; just because they are the big 3.
But I really appreciate you looking out!

I have started to really like base set stuff (because my childhood, charizard in general, and gold stars) so those are what I am focusing on; which is of course all very expensive. RIP :stuck_out_tongue:

And Gary; I totally agree! nothing like that PSA slab sparkle!

Have you considered getting shadowless or unlimited?

I understand. The Blastoise and the Venusaur you can get quite cheap tbh and I don’t think the prices will increase very much short term on the lower grade ones.

There’s also Shadowless if 1st ed is a bit too expensive for you? It,s really undervalued atm. You can buy a 8 for $400 or less.

I appreciate this as well … Ill keep hunting!

Do you guys think Japanese Gold Stars are good investment cards? Especially in 10’s? The value difference between english and japanese is just like 10x

Could you clarify this?

Of course, the 3 cards here.

I know you’re a big ebay seller. If this was your lot; what would you list them for and what would you accept as an offer?

It looks like you’ve had a sale so I’m not sure you need to do any change if you’re okay with that price. If you’d like to get more then raise the price, and stick to your guns on what you want out of them.

Me personally I wouldn’t list them in a group of three, there would be three seperate lots. Complete sets or individual cards is how I sell, either get the most potential buyers or the premium of a complete set (some exceptions). I’d have to have the cards in hand to know what price I would sell for.

Thanks for your input. I did not buy these. He had 2 sets apparently.

I was thinking about it, but was trying to figure out what a fair price to offer would be.

I know it goes by multiple factors; but if the professionals here think its a dumb buy; well I trust the judgement.

Thank you.

Thank god, god. lol

I was worried you’d buy this…

I maybe god on this forum.

But I am no Kim Jong Un (real life “god”) or god in pokemon collecting; thats why I ask.
Instead of making a new topic;

Does anyone have an idea at what a PSA 10 Gold Star Japanese Raquaza is worth? I can find 1st edition ones; not many sales non first edition; but around $400 ish?

I sold a Shining Charizard that was in really, really rough condition for around $80 in the beginning of the year. About 3-4 creases, a corner bend, scratching all over the Shining portion and random dirt and grime specks on the back side. It wasn’t pretty needless to say, but people will still buy them. I paid $17 for it on a buy it now auction along with a Shining Kabutops for the same price in slightly better condition, sold that one for around $35 I believe.

It makes sense because not everyone can afford a $200-300 dollar NM copy of Shining Charizard or any other valuable card for that matter. Sometimes having something in less than perfect condition is better than nothing, I understand that. I don’t settle for less than perfect personally.
