CGC Changed Their Grading Scale & Label

I just want a simple and unique display piece. Don’t draw too much attention away from the thing inside the plastic, don’t overload me with visual information, and don’t look like every other label ever made.

The labels are nearly identical, though. Only real difference is the PSA hologram on the bottom.

And, that’s fair, although I disagree that the new label is less distinguishable. It looks very distinct from BGS and PSA labels. I think people need to give it some more time.

Because CGC has superior cases with superior viewability. That’s why I use them at least, and I suspect that’s why most people use them. I don’t know a single person who used them because they were just infatuated with the 9.5 grade + the blue label lol. Those were the only two things that really annoyed me about CGC and I’m frankly glad they’re transitioning. I do wish they did this MUCH sooner though. They were way too stubborn about making this change, IMO. Should’ve happened 2.5 years ago.

I agree. I think time is the determining factor. I’m also curious how it will look with non 1% cards. Seeing it with a variety of cards/values will be the real test.

At least PSA labels take up the appropriate amount of the slab. CGC insists on taking up soooo much real estate.

I dont think there’s another label that is noticeably similar to the new design (the closest that comes to mind is SGC because of color and layout but the differences are still noticeable when looking at the slabs). There is not much merit to distinguishing different company slabs across the room when viewers would need to still physically hold the card to see it. A design can be subtlely pronounced without being an eyesore.

Theyve actually done what I’ve said they should’ve done at the start. Combine the best of psa and bgs. Powerful move and well executed. Looks like this will be the breakaway @dyl.

Geez that does not look good

The across the room bit was a figure of speech. Just emphasizing how brand identity helps distinguish a psa card from the rest of the pile.

Idk, to me brand identity and coherence are important.
PSA simple label communicates professionalism, being in the hobby since forever, confident adult stuff.
CGC blue label to my eyes was more like: less formal and boring, modern, new company trying to improve how the job is done, simple to read and even technical/nerdy with subgrades.
Now CGC looks kinda stuck in between, not in a good way imho.

Overhauling your brand image so much is risky, since you just gave up a ton of effort used to build your image, Also people likes stability and being able to recognize things immediately, otherwise they will be confused and perceived you as not reliable,

I understand your perspective, but I think you’re in the tiny minority of people who actually liked the blue label. People (myself included) have relentlessly trashed the blue label on here for the past 3 years. Simply put, blue distracts too much from the actual card.

I wonder how errors will be labeled with the new stuff, that was really the biggest thing CGC had going for it lately I feel.

New labels are just as ugly/cheap looking. No subgrades. No premium on 10/pristine over BGS and PSA. Grading scale changed last year (IMO) and now again. Tell me again why I would grade at CGC?

I guess errors that PSA won’t do?

What is going to happen to the green inked label?

My question is, if a card has an improper 9.5 label because it has 2x 9.5 sub grades and 2× 9 subgrades. Do they give it the 10?

Edit: I have a 1st Edition Base Nidoking with these subgrades but a 9.5 label.

I’ve been reading about this change for like 35 minutes despite never grading a single card with them. why do I even care? what is wrong with me?

When the pop report comes back up you can verify the cert number and it will tell you if it’s a 10 or not

I hate the label so much, it reminds me immediately of about 6 other garbage start ups here in Europe. Also charging people to get slabs turned over to the new label? Bad day to be a cgc loyalist imo

Bgs have no choice but to change their grading scale now.
