Can I refund buyer without a case or paypal?

I have a buyer who has waited over a month for an untracked package. He waited a week longer than I asked him to after his first message, but still hasn’t received it. I asked him to open a case and I’ll just refund through there as I think that’s the best way to do it. He said he’d rather not open 5 different cases (5 cards in combined shipment) and have black marks put on our accounts. He then says “I’m not sure what your ebay fees are like but you can just deduct a few percentage points from the total and do a manual refund next week if it’s easier” which I’m translating to mean he’ll essentially pay for my FVF if I refund through paypal.

If he’s offering to pay for my FVF, am I safe to just refund through paypal? I’ve read that giving a full refund through paypal can give you a defect. I’ve been googling for like 2 hours and it seems my only options are refund through paypal, or refund through him opening cases. It looks like I can’t cancel the order since it’s over 30 days old.

I’d contact eBay. They’re more responsive than I think most people think – If he’s locked out they’ll have to overhaul it. In my experience if you refund (fully) via PayPal it will close the case in turn – but the 30 days is weird. I’d reach out to them or go ahead and just refund him because if eBay isn’t giving him the option to close then it’ll just save time and stress to refund – also, the worst thing they’d do, I believe, would be force a refund. But then, you’ve already refunded it.

Sorry if that’s convoluted – the other thing with googling for ebay/paypal tips is look at the time-stamps on things, I’ve ran into policy changes in the past.

Hope this helps!

If he hasn’t opened a case yet you can just go to each item and select cancel item and choose buyer asked to cancel. That will refund them their money and you the fees. HOWEVER a buyer worried about opening 5 cases because it may look suspicious on their account seems fishy to me. Its almost like they are doing this sort of item not received scam often and they don’t want eBay to catch on just my two cents from an eBay veteran.

I didn’t think about contacting eBay, so that’s a good idea. And yeah I found a lot of stuff from 5+ years ago when googling, but google makes it easy to find more recent stuff by selecting a time frame under “tools”.

@uponeagleswings I tried cancelling, but can’t find the option to. I read that you can’t cancel orders that are over 30 days old, so I’m assuming this why I’m not seeing the option. I’ve cancelled before with no issues.

Contact ebay support and discuss your options; I really don’t think it’s a good idea to do a manual refund because it opens the possibility for the buyer to open another case and then you’ll lose your money twice.

I understand the case in regards to the buyers point of view but it’s still really weird…especially since final value fees are usually 10% so if the order amount if big the loss is pretty huge.

I also have a package in the mail since 7/22… seller has been great- but I opened a case with eBay seeking a refund and they have sat on it for a week. I called them a ton this week… they are “escalating” it…

Honestly- I just want the card.

Crazy hearing so many usps stories like this. 5/6 weeks with nothing??

According to my seller- mine is one of 4 packages that are missing in the mail…

there is nothing wrong with opening multiple item not received cases. there is only a strike on your account if you fail to respond.
have him open them, and select to refund within the time frame

I have a Japan seller who told me to wait, to wait and to wait, now it’s 5 months I’ve been waiting…
The maximum time to open a case is 6 months, right? Should I open a case through ebay or paypal? thanks in advance :stuck_out_tongue:
