Bidders Identity Protected

What are some reasons a seller would enable this other than to be shifty?

that’s the only reason

To stop people from bidding up the winning bidder with multiple bids ontop of their initial bid.

Legitimate 0 feedback bidders might dissuade potential bidders if they think the bids are not genuine.

For general privacy reasons. It is pretty easy to guess who a bidder is if you wanted to and you know their feedback score etc.

Often it’s used to conceal shill bidding.

It’s mainly for shill bidding. Any other reason is secondary at best.

I guess if you were embarrassed about an item you were bidding on? And you actually thought someone you knew would happen to stumble on eBay and see your username had bid on it? This would be a main use of this option to hide your identity. Did no one else think of this? Lol. But of course, shilling is probably what it actually gets used for.
