Right, so Base is the most iconic…but “best” isn’t the same thing as “iconic”, so that one’s out.

My top 5:

Neo Revelation
Ex Dragon
Ex Delta Species
Skyridge
Team Rocket

Of those, Skyridge probably takes the title for the sheer art, variety, chase & print quality.

Vending!

  • Such a great theme being based on the original games

  • Amazing art variety, also features illustration contest winners

  • Glossy, old back JP exclusive

  • Affordable

I would say VS. Its strongest feature is that is dispenses with usual 16 holo cards per set that was the standard and pushed the boundary to make the nonholos just as important.

go check out all the major pokemon popularity polls by the pokemon company and the ones on reddit and google monthly search volume. The polls of have sample sizes of 6000 - 12000+. Charizard consistently rates above pikachu by a large margin. Pikachu doesn’t break top 25 in some of them. I was shocked when I first did the research. Pikachu beats charizard only in the official JP polls.

We have done best set polls on e4 as well I think it went base - skyridge - destiny

I think there’s a distinction between “favorite” and “popular”.

For example, you may also see Pikachu do better if you ask people for their top 10 Pokemon and did a count. Weird that Sableye and Magnemite beat out both Pikachu and Charizard in your Japanese poll. I think we can all agree that Pikachu and Charizard are both more popular Pokemon.

There’s also the distinction between fans and non-fans. I guarantee more people across the world know Pikachu before Charizard

Hey, it’s a togetic!!!

My top 5:

Base Unlimited
Neo Revelation
Team Rocket
Fossil
Jungle

As an error collector cards in these sets are the most fulfilling for me, with base unlimited having the widest variety of errors to find/collect in my experience. Though I mostly focus on holos, and I’ve ordered these based on my own preferences.

And dedenne was no. 1! Japan was on something different for that poll

Or the poll had heavy design biases. Unfortunately I can’t look at the original form but I think it was done through Twitter so I assume that there was some social referencing that skewed the data for that one. Magnetite is consistently top 25 in JP tho

I love Fossil because it contains many of my favorite Gen 1 Pokemon.

However, “best” implies that it has universal appeal, an excellent consumer experience when opening packs, collectibility, ability to evoke nostalgia, etc. Unfortunately, I think Base Set fits the bill.

So we’re just not gonna talk about art at ALL???

This is hilarious and fascinating to me. Does anyone know what it is that Japan loves about Magnemite?

That could be a new thread: “Best set art of all time”

A lot of older collectors grew up with art that you might think is bland. It may not be your cup of tea but a lot of us love the style. It reminds us of simper times.
