Best Scanners for PSA Cards?

After reading this thread and trying the scanner myself, I’m not so sure the the Epson V370 is the best recommendation for scanning graded cards. I’m hoping we can find a better one.

@willyboy - would you mind scanning some modern full arts (XY & SM era) and a couple of reverse holo E-Series cards if you have them? I saw your scans with the 550 and noticed you didn’t have the light dots that we’re getting on the 370.

The V370 is the best bang for your buck in my opinion. It’s really not even a debate. Point me towards a better option for $100-$130 and I’ll buy one today.

*Edit: Looking back at the old posts I want to try the V550! I missed the original link that @willyboy made. Looks good and no reflection. I’m also considering using that diffusing paper now too. Interesting.
…Now that I’ve scanned nearly ALL of my cards

@charizandrew The light reflections are going to be there but depending on whether you place the card in portrait or landcape the reflections will be more apparent on one side or the other. I’ve settled on landscape. I’ve found that some cards have more of a blooming light reflection than others and it can be because of card color, holo shininess, or case variance. Using fun backgrounds helps detract from the reflections in my experience.

@benoit489 PWCC does not use a scanner now. Their new images are taken via camera, probably a top of the line one at that plus a specialty lens made for close ups.

One other detail to note is the drop shadow often left on one edge of the card depending on the orientation in which you’ve scanned it. It is unavoidable with some cases but I’ve found that the newest PSA cases don’t leave a shadow.

Since I bought this card we can use it for comparison. The PWCC image on the left, my scan using a V370 on the right.
thousands of dollars vs $130.

Open the image in a new tab on a PC to see the raw file.

@zap2, my main concern with the Chansey picture is the excessive green shining on the holo. I’d like to find a scanner that doesn’t cause reflections like that.

Hmmm… I mean the card’s holo is basically a mirror so putting direct light on is going to cause some shine. The reason it appears slightly green is the light spectrum used in the scanner is slightly blue so that combined with the hint of yellow coloring that the Chansey’s holo has puts out a green effect. If you blow the image up you’ll see the vertical scratching from the sheet being moved but in the image on the left it’s almost completely invisible. I actually like a good holo that pops when you hit it with light. The holos that are dull aren’t my style.

@zap2 , I was actually able to figure out where the green comes from. You’ll notice almost all holos have an extra touch of green, it’s just most apparent on cards with either mirror holos or light colored holos. It’s due to the green strip of silicon that runs along the length of the LED lights.

You can see it clearly on this Mew card:

It causes issues with modern cards as well.

Ah, that does make more sense. Now what if you took it apart and put a strip of black tape or something along the green part?

@zap2
I agree such an awesome scanner! Pity mine gave out, have you noticed any loud noises while scanning? How many scans you reckon you have been through?

It has made the loud noise a couple times, usually after sitting for a while without use or if it’s on an uneven surface but it always corrected that after I stopped it and put it on a table or something flat. I have over a thousand scans on my computer and have probably used it another couple hundred times in the past or for files that were deleted so I’m probably pretty close to that 1500 mark. If it goes out I may try that V550 or I might tinker with it to see why it failed.

I’m considering it, maybe some electrical tape? I’d be curious to see what the 550 scans look like first. Might try to sell the 370 and put that money towards a 550 it can avoid these pitfalls.

@benoit489, sorry for the long reply, kinda stopped checking this thread, but yeah I actually have a few that I took for my ebay account, just check the following links! (Sorry they’re not higher res, I just use 300dpi for ebay) The scanner is awesome for PSA cards, but with ungraded singles I find it takes less time to just take pictures.

@willyboy what scanner do you use?

An Epson V550, bought it used for $120 on ebay and have not been disappointed

@willyboy, thank you!! It looks like the Epson V550 is the best option under $200 at this point. Is this the listing you bought from? www.ebay.com/itm/202333184489

For comparison, I have a reverse holo Mew as well!

Yup that’s the listing! Though I checked earlier and saw a few for cheaper, might even be able to find one for under $100 if you’re lucky

@willyboy, are you able to open the lid up all the way so that you can scan with it open? The V370 has hinges on the long side of the scanner and it can be completely opened so the lid lays flat next to the scanner. Does the V550 offer the same thing? I noticed it opens at the top along one of the short sides.

I’m sold! Thank you @willyboy and @benoit489 . I returned my Epson V370 and am buying the V550 refurbished for less than I paid for the new V370. Here it is for $120, a good enough deal for me.

Hello everyone, new here. Can someone point me to the right direction on authenticing graded cards on ebay. I see so many low priced cards graded from china and the numbers say they are legit. How do you guys do your due diligence? Thanks again.
