It’s incredible how badly they both suck in Gen 1 with the 35 Special stat on top of 50 HP, you wonder who thought it was a good idea to do that. Even among all the inane Gen 1 decisions that one really stands out.

I remember thinking hitmonchan for coverage before I knew what stats were, then hitmonlee for damage output, then hitmontop because it was cool and new, and then better fighting types came along

Yeah, it´s the whole fighing type though. Machamp was supposed to be the apex, and they give it submission. An 80 bp move with recoil and imperfect accuracy. They had a lot to learn about balance back in RB.

Submission is one of the forgotten moves that might as well not exist after Gen 2. From the best/only option to complete obscurity.

Hitmonlee has no mouth. How does it eat? Super creepy.
It also looks like a chicken drumstick if you squint your eyes.
Hitmonchan is just a boxer. Not super creative as Pokemon go.
Personally, I’ve been a much bigger fan of Primape and (later) Annihilape. Infinitely cooler in my opinion.
