Hello, I’m relatively new here (if this thread is in the wrong section I apologize).
I’m your typical example of someone who collected as a kid and has grown older and returned to the hobby, which also means I have a nostalgia set which (you may have guessed by now) is the ex series. I’ve spent the past 3 months familiarizing myself with the community, the market, PSA grading, getting a feel for sets I’d like to collect, etc.
Now onto the actual topic at hand, I’m considering going after gold star cards. PSA 10’s are relatively expensive, and I am a college student working part-time so I don’t see myself buying a single gem mint gold star any time soon. I’ve spent the past couple of days looking at gold stars ranging from PSA 7 to 9, which leads me to why I’m posting this thread.
Do you think it’s worth buying a gold star anywhere from PSA 7-9? I have been thinking about creating a master set of PSA 8+, not too sure yet. I know this question purely subjective, but I’d like a few opinions before diving into it.
A lot depends on whether you want them for your collection or to resell. For example, I usually buy PSA 8 holos for my binder sets, but if I’m investing or want a specific card for my collection I’ll stick to PSA 9/10
I don’t have any intention of selling cards anytime soon, so this would all be for a collection. I could see myself going for PSA 9’s honestly, would just take more time, planning, and saving up. In the long run it seems like a better decision.
If you have limited money to collect with and you want to complete sets, look for strong 9s which you can feel good looking at. With 10s there’s always that range of strong-weak which can cause doubt about what you payed to get that in your collection.
So true. I’m almost happy I can’t afford 10s on some of the cards I collect… I’d argue some of my 9s look just as good. I just couldn’t justify paying sometimes 10x the money for the same exact card(that got regraded 10 times). I feel finding actual strong 10s of each card would be nearly impossible or way too expensive.
OP, buy what you can afford. Gold stars are very hot and they will only appreciate on the long run. You can’t go wrong with NM/M copies. I probably wouldn’t go below PSA 8, but that,s just me… Collect and enjoy, just do the proper research and try not to overpay. Cheers.
