I was just looking through eBay this morning and I found some auctions by PWCC. One card was a japanese Rayquaza Rulers of the Heavens PSA10

([https://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Pokemon-Japanese-Rulers-Of-the-Heavens-Holo-Rayquaza-EX-47-PSA-9-MINT/353241779082?hash=item523ed9cb8a:g:RCEAAOSw~ddfi2mi](https://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Pokemon-Japanese-Rulers-Of-the-Heavens-Holo-Rayquaza-EX-47-PSA-9-MINT/353241779082?hash=item523ed9cb8a:g:RCEAAOSw~ddfi2mi))

and the english variant

([https://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Pokemon-EX-Dragon-Holo-Rayquaza-97-PSA-10-GEM-MINT/353241778483?hash=item523ed9c933:g:WMUAAOSwCwJfi2lY](https://www.ebay.com/itm/2003-Pokemon-EX-Dragon-Holo-Rayquaza-97-PSA-10-GEM-MINT/353241778483?hash=item523ed9c933:g:WMUAAOSwCwJfi2lY) ).

They were posted around the same time, but one of the auctions just has more popularity over the other. Could this be because people do not care about Japanese cards as much or is it because English set is known as “EX Dragons” and the Japanese set is known as “Rulers of the Heavens”? Same thing is happening with the Dragonite cards of the same set.

English cards are worth more simply because of nostalgia so they’re more popular. That’s it for 95% of cases. There’s still thousands of us Japanese collectors, as well as people who collect both. Compared to other languages like Korean or Chinese, Japanese is miles ahead of them.
If you like Japanese cards, you’re in luck because they’re cheaper than English almost always. There’s nothing wrong with them and there’s no reason you or anyone else shouldn’t collect them.

I see. Well I am in luck. I love Japanese cards because Pokemon originates from Japan. English cards are foreign cards in my opinion.

Yup, I love that the Japanese cards still have a first edition. I only collect first edition Japanese cards and some trophy cards.

Damn. The only modern card in my collection is a first edition mega lucario. Why did they get rid of first edition? It was a nice thing to see at the bottom left corner.

All of this stuff is completely subjective and people have to make their own decisions.

Many of my favorite cards that I own are Japanese. Trophies, Vending Series, non-TCG cards, etc.

But when it comes to set cards, I prefer English. It’s what I collected growing up and I just like them.

So I generally collect English when it’s available, but also love collecting Japanese exclusive cards.

Again, this is just how I do things. People can choose to look at the cards however they like.

If I was coming into the hobby today I would 100% being going for Japanese set cards over English purely due to the value you get for your money.

1st editions need to stay dead. They have no place in the current market.

Have you not seen the scalper market?
The 1st editions would be horded by distributors. If any hit shelves, there would be people waiting at the shelves to buy them out. Normal people, kids, no one would have a chance at them without paying 5X market price.
This kills the whole market for many collectors and takes away any chance for the kid that buys a pack while at the store to pull a card that is worth anything. Meanwhile all none first editions would be collecting dust across the world, as no one would want them and their pretty much worthless cards.
It’s bad for the hobby and really bad for the young generation that wants to buy pokemon cards.

Store bought packs as they are, bring people into the hobby. Anyone had a chance to pull a good card, at MSRP. This is great for the health of the hobby.

Japanese exclusives, are the only hype for me in terms of modern collecting. The most modern set I have complete in english is Generations, specifically due to its release. Waiting each month for a new mythical collection box to be released was an exciting chase.
