Anyone Else Not A Fan Of Modern Cards? (Full Arts)

Totally agree with those that are calling out the tag team alternate arts as being really great. I personally appreciate both vintage and modern. I do find that that some of the original WotC cards are a little bland, but it’s hard to beat the nostalgia. That said, some of the modern cards that are 3D look pretty bad.

I asked this already but am not sure if the person responded. On the tag team arts is that specific to one set or is this something that you can find in multiple of the newer sets? I have seen them in a japanese set but am not sure if there are multiples. Also agree that some of the simplicity of WOTC tugs on my heart strings from the nostalgia of memories with friends and my pops. Such simple times.

Haha I was blown away by the amount of responses. I am new here but did not anticipate so much feedback. (Took a nap and came back like wow!) I feel like I am spamming the thread I created but I am incredibly appreciative of all of the feedback. Whether it is agreeing or disagreeing with how much time (and money) I have been spending on the hobby it is awesome to be around others that are at least as passionate.

So the tag team arts are found in multiple English sets from the Sun and Moon era. The sets are:

• Team Up
• Unbroken Bonds
• Unified Minds
• Cosmic Eclipse

There is also the Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno bird trio in Hidden Fates as well. Lastly, some of the tag team arts (particularly the alternate arts) were made as promo cards.

I was hoping not to open a can of worms but it does seem some feel very strongly about what is better.

Do you know what ERA they stopped with hand drawn art? Where any of the early sets from Nintendo hand drawn? I recently picked up the Southern Islands set and I am absolutely in love with the art. Even going after many of the old black star promo cards from the WOTC era there are many unique options. I never collected Japanese as a kid, but recently picked up a few and almost won the auction for a complete Rocket Gang set two days ago (I was so close). My main incentive for Japanese is two fold, overall, they are cheaper than their english counterparts, there are some exclusives (band cards, cd promos, vending machines) and the cards really seem so much easier to find in better condition. I have heard this is due to both card stock and just stricter guidlines in the factories which I am a huge fan of. Since I do not play the game and just collect the artwork is gorgeous either way (even if I cannot read the card).

It’s fine, don’t worry at all. Everyone who is passionate is going to be intense about their interests. They aren’t done with hand drawn. It is still done on occasion. But WOTC era (the original few years) and the Japanese original era were almost exclusively hand drawn, and have the aesthetic I value as an artist myself. They still do hand drawn but it is dwarfed by the huge amount of CG they do. And most of the hand drawn of today that does happen is a different style and pokemon design. It’s just different. I like a few of the original artists conceptual Mon and card design the most. And early nintendo stuff has plenty of hand illustration. It was over time they started to stray further from that classic style. Neo Destiny in particular is a great set because it shows you can bring in different artists, do all hand drawn and paint and get wildly different design and aesthetic. It’s not like you can run out of styles doing it. They just wanted to develop a new layout and look.

Southern islands rules! It is also WOTC era. And Japanese? You nailed it by mentioning the exclusives. That’s what it is all about. Coro Coro, vending, carddass, natta wake promos, CD, set exclusives, you name it. All so so good. Yeah, higher quality control, some better manufacturing processes. Also the aesthetic with thinner borders and a few other things are amazing. I can’t read Japanese either. It is all about art work for me.

This is true, I would rather a debate than people that arent really opinionated haha (at least in this not other parts of my life). Good to know, thank you for the info on the hand drawn era. There is definitely something special about that similar to movies that use real props versus CGI. I wish I had collected the NEO cards as a kid there are some beautiful cards. I picked up Pichu recently and think it is gorgeous. I am not the biggest fan of the borders on the e-reader series but some of the art is very unique.

Not sure how to insert. It was an ebay seller that collected with his brothers and decided to part with alot of the collection. They are in very good condition. I am going to send them off to be graded so that I can handle then without worrying.

You may have listed off some Japanese sets that I am not even aware of haha. I have homework todo now. I love the borders on Japanese cards as well that is another great point.

• anything made by 5ban just throw it away.

I personally really like the BW-era Full Arts but I feel like the S&M era are a lot weaker. I also don’t like how there are 3-4 rarities for a lot of the Ultra Rares (Half art, Full art, Rainbow, Gold for some).

Full arts are so hit or miss. The above cards are amazing, some of my favorite Pokemon cards. But on the other hand, like some other people have mentioned, you get the boring static image on a monochrome background…just, blah.

If you don’t like the art fine, just don’t Collect it and quit complaining. Like it or not it’s Pokémon’s decision. They pay for the art. Obviously not hurting them monetarily to use 5ban for art. Don’t need a thread ragging on an artist because you have issues with cgi art.

Kind of indifferent towards Full Art Pokemon (with the exception of tag team alt arts, which I love), but I think Full Art Supporters consistently have some of the best art that the game has ever produced.

Totally agree, i mean one of my top 5 favorite cards is Cynthia (HIF) FA, that card does everything for me. Great artwork, great character story, playable, etc. Almost all FA trainers are super cool, about FA pokemon is more hit or miss, in S&SH i’ve really got a liking for the rainbow hyper rare which i used to despite in sun and moon.

I think is a bit hyperbolic to say “all modern” because there are so many cool cards in modern.

Someone else referenced 5ban earlier and I had no idea what that was. Now I get it they are one of the groups of illustrators for the cards.

I may need to pick up a few packs from those sets if I am able to find them at a reasonable price. Thanks for your input.

Having so many definitely makes it much harder to complete a set IMO. Finishing up Jungle and Fossil sets and dealing with holo vs non holo variations was enough as far as versions go for me.

It’s also not 5bans fault if Pokemon recognises that people love the cards so much, they create multiple versions of them in different rarities.

OMG that VilePlume is amazing. That is definite a full art that I could see myself wanting just for the adorable art work. I actually got that Pikachu card coming in the mail from a lot of 3 full arts that I won. Its the Charizard and Venusaur full arts from the promo series. Not sure if I will be keeping or not. I am not sure if you are responding to me or someone else. If you are responding to someone else talking about 5ban great. If you are talking to me then I am not sure why you felt the need to come in here and comment something that really contributes nothing and sets a highly unnecessary tone.
