Having read through the thread I land pretty firmly in the camp believing that AI art should not be allowed in an Illustration Contest because I don’t feel that it meets the bar to be considered art. A huge problem I have with AI generated “art” is that it takes too big of a shortcut in the artistic process. I understand that as certain mediums are timeless and others, like photography for example, have changed as new technologies have become available. The difference for me here is that it is too easy for someone to input a loose set of directions into an AI tool and have the tool spit out an image that is usually an amalgamation of other’s artwork. This process skips the steps that require real human input

You go out of your way to value the human artist and then end it by bashing some of them by drawing a line to connect them to the AI ones?
You mean techbros and other tumours who would not be able to draw an egg without the assist of AI stealing every image on the Internet.

That’s a pretty broad accusation. We don’t even know the real number of submissions given that they simply copied over the last one. Not saying that 95% of the submitters are Japanese but throwing out numbers like that when we can’t even verify half of the artists and people with Japanese names could actually be living outside Japan is too presumptuous even if TPC has a reputation for being insular.
Not sure what the whole context of this was but it was also an event happening in Japan. Obviously I wasn’t there but I doubt that the event attracts many foreigners who are not already associated with the tournament in some way. This isn’t the World Cup or Olympics.
AI “art” is nothing but the amalgamation of the work of others it has stolen.
If you read what I said correctly, it is a clear jab and bashing of the judges and TPCI, not so much the illustrators. It isn’t devaluing artists by stating that some submissions aren’t as good as others, or that last contest’s winners were inferior to so, so many of the top 300. So I don’t see how you could say I’m bashing them with a straight face, when the point of a contest is to compare art to other art and determine who is the best or most favorable anyway.
On an additional note I’ve never shied away from my distaste for most digital art—most, not all—for the exact reason that I’ve made mention of here and on many other threads, that they appear to not have character, style, inspiration, and many more elements that make hand made art so much more charming and unique to me. Having to do with the toolset being limited vs unlimited. At least in its current state. The appearance of the AI subs is that they encompass everything bad about the most unappealing digital art, but take it to the extreme by adding the element of thievery to it.
Art is subjective. Prior winners, Yuu Nishida, Jiro Sasumo and REND have done some spectacular art in the TCG since winning and it’s not like their winning submissions were mediocre either. To you, maybe, but again it’s subjective.
Bashing the judges for their inability to discern AI art (they aren’t even the same judges every year) and then saying, no surprise because of what they chose in the past is linking the two together.
If you don’t have any context then why respond? Worlds is the closest thing in Pokemon to the World Cup or Olympics so your comparison is just uneducated. I went to multiple events at Worlds 2024 and I can assure you the racial distribution was extremely different for Matsuri Park. It also had a ton of families attended, meaning multiple Japanese people in the same family won the lottery whereas I don’t think anyone I know who went to worlds won the primary lottery.
It’s absolutely not suprising for TPC to do given the general xenophobia that is present in Japan and also this was the most “Japanese” of all the events they hosted. They probably saw it as more of “their” event- or put more nicely that foreigners would have a hard time understand the festival format.
Below were the only other obviously non-Japanese people present. (And a murkrow)

Because there is an undertone of discrimination just for the sake of it?
Are many families making the trip to Japan where the event is just watching singular matches on a projector that they could do at home? Maybe I am out of touch and there are many privileged parents doing just that.
But it’s not like outside of Worlds Pokemon just disappears in Japan.
Anyway it was also the link with the contest participation that made me comment on it. In the 2022 contest, I counted 70 names that were likely not Japanese, which is still ‘only’ 23% but once again, it’s not like we know what the breakdown of submissions by country was or the art submitted by every submitter.
If you go by the Twitter hashtag, sure there is art by non-Japanese that look like they could have got in, but same can be said for art by Japanese.

Last worlds I attended had competitors from 49 countries.

Like I said, I was referring to people unaffiliated with the tournament which would exclude competitors and their families who would presumably be at the event competing and supporting not outside the event hall at a pop-up amusement park.
The first thing I did when the contest submission guidelines were posted was to see what the stance was on AI. Seeing no rules against it I knew it wasn’t worth entering.
I feel bad for the people that did put effort into creating something only for AI art to take some of the spots.

I mean, sure but, and I’m clearly one of the greatest haters of AI theft here, but 97% of them are genuine artists. And also I don’t think it was intentional to let AI thieves participate because that will destroy the collecting side of the TCG.

Could this have been for entries under multiple names and not related to Ai usage? Assuming that the Vigo K entries were the ones disqualified.

That may be it, since the rules didn’t state anything against AI usage (in this contest). The closest thing it has is for straight up plagiarism:
- B.MUST NOT contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to material that violates privacy, publicity, or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement.
- ⅰ.Without limiting the foregoing, Submissions MUST NOT include third-party trademarks, logos, insignia, location signage, photographs, artwork, or sculptures, except those of the Sponsors.
- ⅱ.MUST NOT include any reference to or performance of any copyrighted media production including but not limited to books, articles, photographs, artwork, music, etc., or identifying descriptions of any media property. Submissions must not include commercial music.
- ⅲ.If a Submission contains materials belonging to a third party that has provided Entrant with permission to use such materials in the Submission, Entrant must provide written copies of such permission on request by the Sponsors and ensure that the permission allows Sponsors to use the materials in full for any purpose as stated in section 8 below.

Yeah I wouldn’t get my hopes up that fast. Disqualifying Vigo is easy because he was stupid. There are at least 4 other AI entries. They may even be more of Vigo’s alts if he branched out lol.
