Currently at University, so haven’t been checking out the pokemon market for the past month and a half or so. But what is with the sudden price increase in Ace Spec cards?
Expanded tournaments are a big thing this year, basically required if you’re trying to make it to worlds. Ace Specs are fantastic cards in expanded decks, those sets have been out of print for a long time. Increasing demand with a supply that’s been stagnant for years leads to increased prices!
Dowsing machine and computer search have seen the biggest increases. I think it has cooled off a bit, but they did shoot up overnight at one point. Only need (and limited by rule) to 1 per deck, so I think some of it was exaggerated worry about inventory drying up. I think there were small buyouts of the already meager inventory that was listed at ~$20 for computer search and sub $10 for dowsing machine. That caused computer search to go near 70-80 from what I saw and now it is back towards 40 as a lot of people became sellers at those prices and a lot came out of the woodwork.
Only the chase Ace Specs have gone up in price, the commons are just as cheap as they were since they got rotated.
Expanded got way bigger than I expected it to, last cup I went to it was as big as standard.
I think the reason is many new standard decks are super competitive in expanded as well, so you just have to change a few cards and you have a deck very competitive in both.
Few months back it was the complete opposite, rarely saw a standard-ish deck in expanded.
When you remember you have 2 pages of Computer Search Ace Specs in a binder somewhere at home because you bought them for 2 dollars a piece from people when they were rotated out.
