To celebrate 30 years of Pokémon, I thought it would be fun to host a 30-DAY PHOTO PROMPT CHALLENGE - one post for each year of Pokémon!
The prompts are inspired by the first generation Red/Green/Blue games, but you’re welcome to share cards from any generation / series. I’ve intentionally kept the prompts open-ended so that pretty much anyone can join in, regardless of what you collect!
The challenge officially starts on 27th February, but I’m sharing the prompts early to give you time to prepare!
Tips for participating:
Please try to include the date / prompt title in your post so it’s easy for everyone to follow. (Feel free to copy and paste any of the graphics in this post if you like).
Any Pokémon TCG card is welcome.
Feel free to get creative with how you interpret the prompts!
You can dip in and out - there’s no obligation to post all 30 days, but it’d be awesome if you did!
Most importantly: have fun and enjoy the nostalgia!
Can’t wait to see everyone’s collections! Let me know if you’re planning to take part!
I think the CD Promo holos are some of my all-time favourite Pokemon cards. I picked this Venusaur up when I was in Japan last summer along with the matching Blastoise. The only one I’m missing is Charizard. As you can see, the condition isn’t great, but that Sugimori artwork really captures the essence of Pokemon back when it first started out. Seemed fitting for the 30th anniversary!
This is one of my favorite Charizard arts and one I feel is overlooked. I am currently collecting all XY full arts, and this one is one of my favorites.
One of my favorite cards that I own! As a kid I saw this card in a magazine before knowing that new Pokemon were coming out. I had no idea what it’s name was or what it could do. I remember going to bed that night imagining Totodile playing in the lily pads and chomping on things.
As a kid, I imagined if I was a real Pokemon trainer my Bulbasaur would stay an Ivysaur after evolving, as I wasn’t a big fan of Venusaur at the time. And funnily enough, these two cards are my favorite cards of Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. The artist never drew a Venusaur in this style, so they feel very poetic in that way to me!
Love this story and love the artwork! My favourite Pokemon is Porygon and when I read that it was canonically made in 1995 by Silph Co - my birth year - I felt like it was meant to be! Love it when things line up like that
Squirtle has always been my favorite among starters and also my first choice when it comes to Gen 1 games. I love this card by Yuka Morii and is also my favorite amongst the starters that she has done.
My very first Pokemon game was Red version, so this one was never up for debate. This challenge seems way too fun not to join. I’m in for the full 30 days!
I decided not to choose a card, so I went with a manga volume featuring the cover of the legendary Trainer Red. The artwork was done by Mato, an artist who worked on the manga until she was forced to stop due to health issues. Since it’s the end of the first arc—the equivalent of the Red, Blue, and Green editions—it closes with a tribute to the promotional artwork that Ken Sugimori created for the games.
