2025 Grading Company Debate

, ,

The most recent available data shows PSA not only increasing the number of cards they grade by 15% YoY but maintaining the 75-80% of graded TCG submissions they’ve held since 2022. There are no signs of a PSA decline in the numbers, really the only trend visible in the last few years has been a decline in BGS’ grading volume and a commensurate increase in SGC. CGC isn’t catching up, TAG is a drop in the bucket compared to the larger companies.

Vert, it’s fine to have an opinion on which grading company you prefer, but there’s zero evidence of any shift in broader preference for grading companies.

CGC > PSA :handshake: PSA > TAG

Grade 90% with psa, any pristine contenders with CGC, black lab gamble some with bgs, paid instagram/reddit marketing the rest with tag. Thats the way to do it

I will say
Cgc is growing considerably.. at least for tcg
They are moving to 25% of the entire market
Explosive growth

I think psas current 65 business day wait time and huge price increase will only hurt them more.
Also pokeRev has been flaunting cgc pristine 10s lately and their market premiums

I wont be suprised to see CGC at 33% market share soon.
So yes in tcg i can see psa falling a bit in overall share but they are still at capacity and still growing overall with the current Pokemon craze
But you cant deny on a M/M and Y/Y basis CGC has seen the most growth
At least on a % basis

Nobody’s stomping on you man, I promise. You just can’t come out making big statements without any evidence to back it up. If you like CGC that’s fine, but to suggest that the hobby is moving toward some random startup because a handful of influencers (who are probably sponsored by TAG or at least getting a kickback for supporting them) is pretty ridiculous.

That happens when people can’t justify sending their junk to PSA when it’s 19 bucks a card for bulk.

cgc is increasing their prices now wouldnt be surprised if all that mystery slab junk will be all going to tag

I am genuinely kind of impressed PSA is maintaining such a staggering lead in volume even with $19 bulk

Even more impressed beckett is still in business

(sorry, accidentally deleted my post trying to edit it, so reposting)

I can’t see any scratches on any vintage PSA 10s I own when I inspect them closely in person.

TAG, I can see scratches on the surface of the card in the scans. It’s not about them being imperceptible to the naked eye or something.

Here’s an example of a card that sold for PSA 10 prices: TAG Portal (4.4k). I’ve seen more but haven’t really saved them all.

Funny (deleted) reddit thread about it: https://old.reddit.com/r/PokeInvesting/comments/1k75uks/tag_10_first_ed_dark_blastoise_was_this_a_smart/

FWIW, I’m not a PSA exclusive collector, I have several CGC pristine 10s. CGC is hit or miss, some pristines have surface issues, but you can find some that don’t.

Beckett needs to clean house

Owner just needs to sell the company

I mean 2020-2021 where PSA had year long returns didn’t sway anybody to convert to another grading company…

While that’s completely true

A lot of cards are $100 psa10 but worth crap in a psa9 type of card and the psa wait time and premium is just big risk to get back a $30 psa9 and actually lose money vs selling raw

So yeah there needs to be budget options

Also, thats still not a good thing for psa. It will just normalize ppl seeing and collecting cgc slabs and this will hurt psa long term

The overwhelming majority of the Pokemon community is the $30-$200 slab crowd not the $1k+ slab crowd

All im saying is if your psa you want to monopolize all the business, even if its junk cards

lol the comments  price is insane on that thats why i would just dump all tag 10 lol thats like 2 psa 10s in 6-month ago prices

Where do you get these numbers from? These are complete fabrications.

According to the Gemrate data, CGC graded 11.5% of TCG cards submitted to the big 4 companies last year. in 2023 their share was 9.9%, and in 2022 it was 11.3%. They haven’t gained any market share in the last three years. Meanwhile PSA has held 77.1% market share in 2022, 78.5% in 2023, and 75.9% in 2024.

If we look at the numbers from the first four months of 2025, PSA has graded 5.77m cards out of the 7.85m submitted to the big 4 companies, good for a 73.5% market share which is largely in line with the past few years. CGC has increased, but they’re only up to 15.1%, while SGC and BGS are down from their 2024 market share numbers at 8.4% and 3.1% respectively. CGC is nowhere close to 25% market share.

Keep in mind PSA is currently backlogged while CGC isn’t, which can skew the results as CGC adds submissions to their pop report sooner.

I think the argument here would be maybe those kinds of cards shouldnt be graded. If you do, be aware of the risks. I think lots of low value cards flooding away from PSA is actually good for them. It associates the competition with “junk” and low value cards. PSA doesnt seem to need that lower end of the market, at $19 they’re still dominating in market share

Dont get me wrong, I dont like $19 bulk. But this is how it is. Lord knows I have cards I’d send off if bulk was cheaper lol

I really dont know what your on about but if your talking about 2023 you clearly have an agenda. While your at it lets talk about 2021. Maybe lets go back to the first month cgc graded cards while we’re at it to compare market share

Im seeing well over 23% last month graded by cgc
It would be interesting to look at May but i think May will be a large outlier since there was a huge grading rush at cgc to beat the $2 price increase coinciding with psa increasing from 45days to 65days. May might show some ridiculous gains for CGC
