We have all seen the Pikachu 1st edition error black star promo, but has anyone ever seen the Jigglypuff?
It lives in a GodBook I picked up, so I want to believe that somewhere out there it exists in card form. They may have all been destroyed or never even printed, but I feel like one may eventually surface.
I feel like one or some must have existed because it has cut card corners, and signs it was a scanned page. The uncut sheets never include the cut corners.
If we haven’t seen a copy by now, it probably doesn’t exist. There have been 3-4 booms that would have brought out a copy from an ex employee or that was stuck in a childhood binder
I’m not saying the card doesn’t/wouldn’t exist, but I don’t think WOTC God Books would use scanned cards.
Scanning printed cards seems like an unnecessary extra step and would reduce the overall image quality.
There are also references to .eps files being used for the cards, suggesting they work directly from digital assets.
Printing and manually aligning each card perfectly to create a God Book seems like a waste of time and quality, especially when they could simply load their .eps files into a template and generate the entire document digitally at full resolution.
That said, I don’t know for sure, but I’d imagine there’s some overlap with MTG, since it’s all under WOTC. I believe there have been a few MTG God Books shared in the past, Maybe @cataclysm80 could shed some light on if they use scans or digital assets.
I agree some are certainly renders but I have some that are scanned cards in just a 3x3 common binder sleeve page. You can see some cards back to back on this page as well as card texture.
On rare occasions, I’ve seen a scanned page, but it tends to be early WotC stuff, like 1994.
For the most part, the images in god books are created from the same digital assets used to create the sheet layouts, but the templating is a bit different. God books arrange the cards in a different order than the sheet, add a gap between the cards, and show as rounded corners.
The digital assets exist like a database, art, card frames, border color, text, etc.
The god book references the digital assets to generate itself.
The sheet layout software also references the digital assets.
The god book and sheet don’t necessarily have to match, mistakes are possible.
I’ve seen a really crazy misprinted god book, where the various assets didn’t align to the card positions on the page.
Here’s a photo of the last page in a god book that I own, dated April 2003.
There’s a black outline around the unused card positions, and the card edges are all perfectly parallel to each other.
The expansion symbol shown in this god book, doesn’t match the expansion symbol used on the real physical cards, but everything else matches fine.
Your image looks like it might be a color proof, not sure, might actually be a test print.
That’s a bit different than a god book.
Color proof is closer to production, and a test print is actual production.
Which god book contains that Pikachu & Jigglypuff promo?
These two promo cards originally appeared together in Japan, so Japan probably supplied them to WotC together, and that’s how they ended up in this book together.
As far as printing is concerned, the Pikachu promo cards were printed with Jungle, which was released in mid June, and the Jigglypuff was probably printed separately, since it didn’t get released until around November.
His business card along with other staff is in the documents I acquired. He was customer service, so there are likely many more people closer to the printing process. I wouldn’t rule it out entirely, similar to 1st edition Base with shadows. There are two or more samples of it existing but I don’t think any cards have ever surfaced.
Your 1st Edition & Jungle god books were all printed on August 12th.
When were your Fossil & Promo god books printed?
(by the way, any god book printed on a color laser printer, should have the yellow MIC dots which indicate the printing date and serial number of the printer used, so god books could be authenticated if anyone really wants to check)
Good to know that the Pikachu & Jigglypuff are in the Jungle godbook.
Does the Promo god book also contain the Ivy Pikachu, and the Jigglypuff?
Does the Fossil god book also contain some promo cards?
